Job Summary
Position responsible for providing limited Hemodialysis treatment and other services for the Chronic Kidney Disease and Acute Dialysis patient in an Acute or Sub-Acute facility. Also responsible for performing advanced indirect and selected direct Patient Care duties in support of the nursing process in a competent manner under the direction of an RN or LVN as outlined in the Skills Inventory and for performing related clerical functions; responsible for performing Unit Clerk and phlebotomy duties as well as for serving as preceptor and resource to staff.Job Description
Must have a Dialysis Tech Certification through either BONET, NNCC or NNCO.
This position is at our Texas Medical Center Hospital.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Current CPR certification required or must be obtained within 30 days of employment.
- Current Dialysis Technician Certification by one of the three nationally approved certifying bodies: BONET (Board of Nephrology Nursing & Technology), NNCC (Nephrology Nursing Certifying Commission), or NNCO (National Nephrology Certification Organization)
Experience / Knowledge / Skills:
- Minimum of (1) one year experience in an acute dialysis or chronic dialysis facility or other related field required.
- Two (2) years Hospital or Chronic Dialysis Facility experience as a Dialysis Patient Care Technician.
- Approved by the Texas Department of Health Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
- Ability to understand written instructions and perform basic mathematical calculations; demonstrates skills for the acute dialysis assigned specialty area/function or assigned procedures, including a working knowledge of basic medical terminology and computer software skills.
- Demonstrated ability to perform duties with increased responsibilities.
- Ability to perform duties requiring prolonged standing, walking, stooping, bending, and lifting.

Principal Accountabilities:
- Performs indirect and direct chronic acute dialysis Patient Care duties in a competent manner as directed by a physician, registered nurse or licensed vocational nurse within the scope of hospital-approved Dialysis Patient Care Technician skills inventory according to the needs/age of the patient/population served; takes patients' TPR and blood pressure, monitors intake and output, and maintains related records.
- Enters physician orders via computer and coordinates schedules of diagnostic testing; assists patients with written teaching protocols; performs assigned acute dialysis treatments as directed; prepares patients for meals and feeds them; performs/assists with personal care needs; maintains patient dialysis area in orderly fashion; serves as Unit Clerk and/or monitors patients as assigned.
- Ensures safe care to patients adhering to policies, procedures, and standards, within budgetary specifications, including time/supply management, productivity, and accuracy of practice.
- Promotes individual professional growth/development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education, skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff
- Prime Dialyzers, obtain dialysate solution, monitor the delivery system during treatment using all alarm systems, settings and appropriate tests
- Set-up and monitor dialysis equipment and systems; observe equipment and RO water system for correct function, respond to visual and audible alarms, and make appropriate adjustments prior to, during and following dialysis treatment
- Perform water quality checks and safety checks; dismantle, clean and disinfect equipment according to Memorial Hermann Hospital Chronic Acute Dialysis Guidelines.
- Communicate with other ancillary departments necessary to aide in providing services to the Chronic Acute Dialysis Patients
- Assist with ordering of supplies and inventory maintenance.
