Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

This position directly supervises and coordinates the activities of the Pathology Support team including but not limited to obtaining and maintaining equipment and supplies, accessioning specimens, and quality assurance documentation. The person in this position must be able to complete all the tasks required of Pathology support personnel.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Develop, implement and maintain an effective training program for department.
  • Manage the employee hiring process including developing and updating job descriptions, developing performance expectations, identifying essential functions and knowledge, skills and abilities required for applicable positions, and selecting and assigning staff.
  • Supervise/manage employee and team performance including coordinating activities, setting priorities, and directing the work of subordinate employees. Plan and establish work schedules, assignments, and production sequences to meet production goals. Continuously monitor and evaluate departmental operations and work flow, making changes as needed.
  • Responsible for new employee orientation, training and continuing education.
  • Manage employee performance by coaching, counseling, motivating, and evaluating employees on a continual basis. Implement disciplinary action as needed and in consultation with HR.
  • Ensure effective employee relations by sustaining an ethical, non-discriminatory and safe work environment and establishing effective communication lines and methods. Identify and solve employee problems, manage conflict, and respond to grievances as needed.
  • Confer with other supervisors to coordinate operations and activities within or between departments.
  • Monitor and maintain acceptable turnaround time of specimen accessioning, quality assurance and production standards.
  • Develop and edit procedures for Standard Practice, Technical or Quality Control Manuals. Review procedure manuals and stay current with procedural changes that have occurred.
  • Assist pathologist and pathologist assistants in cutting room.
  • Responsible for selecting specimens for grossing and properly hanging tissue on processors.
  • Maintain decal specimens, and keep QC charts on equipment in the accession and cutting room.
  • Prepare routine solutions, maintain an inventory of supplies and store in proper location and keep a clean work area.
  • Responsible for proper disposal and handling of hazardous waste to include xylene recycling (i.e. xylene, reagent alcohol, formaldehyde, B5) and dispose of specimens according to procedures.
  • Exercise all laboratory safety precautions and adhere to lab procedures as stated in procedure manuals.
  • Abide by all regulatory, company and departmental regulations, policies and procedures, including the Corporate Compliance Program.
  • Contribute to a positive work climate and to the team effort of the department and company.
  • Support PathGroup's mission, vision, goals and management decisions.
  • Must be familiar with and abide by the Corporate Compliance Program and all corporate policies, including the Privacy and Security policies.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Work with other departments within PathGroup and subsidiaries.
  • Nothing in the job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this job at any time.

Requirements:

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Two to four years of prior health care environment job-related experience is required.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Medical laboratory experience required.
