Receive and process histology and cytology specimens. Complete patient registrations; including entering patient demographics, insurance information, etc. Works closely with pathologists, pathology assistant, histology and cytology staff to prepare specimens for appropriate examination. Works to ensure a clean workspace; assisting in managing hazardous waste.

 

A. Safety/Risk ManagementMaintains an environment for employees, patients, medical staff, visitors that promote safety consciousness in order to achieve a safe physical environment.

  • Complies with Hospital and department Infection Control guidelines
  • Adheres to chemical hygiene policies
  • Follows confidentiality policy/procedure
  • Adheres to hospital wide and department specific safety regulations
  • Initiates quality improvement reports, and participates in quality improvement audits as necessary.
  • Creates a safe and clean work environment
  • Utilizes the appropriate safety engineering devices/personal protective equipment.
  • B. Coordination of ServicesCoordinates activities, which allow quality work within a timely manner within the pathology services department.

  • Functions efficiently and effectively in pertinent areas during normal operations and computer 'downtimes.'
  • Assures all services are carried out accurately, efficiently, timely and optimally safe.
  • Stocks area, monitors expiration dates of supplies, and alerts appropriate personnel when supplies are low.
  • Receives, labels and stores supplies accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Fill orders from customers for lab supplies.
  • Orders reagents, supplies and instrument consumables in a timely manner to insure continuous service.
  • Coordinates services and resources with laboratory, other department and non-laboratory personnel in a timely manner (i.e. specimens, supplies, reports, etc.).
  • Works independently, covering all aspects of the job.
  • C. Primary Aspects of the JobExhibits organizational skills and a conscientiousness which allows for precise and accurate results in a timely manner. 

  • Performs various types of LIS/HIS registration on patients and/or specimens per hospital and Laboratory procedures
  • Demonstrates proper time management skills and priority setting, and multi-tasking abilities
  • Processes specimens received accurately and promptly
  • Computer entry
  • Confirm interpretation of physician orders
  • Confirm orders with specimen
  • Screen samples for acceptability
  • Takes appropriate action for unsuitable, unacceptable, mislabeled specimens
  • Directs specimens to proper departments and individuals in a timely manner
  • Appropriately prepares specimens for transportation to other clinical laboratories for testing.
  • Maintains accurate records.
  • Completes shipping and packaging training
  • Performs various clerical duties to include but not limited to:
  • Sending out reports
  • Typing as necessary
  • Faxing reports
  • Filing
  • Models professional and customer focused behaviors.

  • D. Communication ManagementMaintains good quality relations between staff, patients, physicians and other departments to promote a good working environment.

  • Handles inquiries regarding procedures and test results.
  • Answer telephone in a friendly manner to include:
  • Routing calls to proper location
  • Taking messages when needed
  • Answering questions
  • Giving verbal results
  • Give accurate instruction regarding specimen collection and patient preparation
  • Documents verbal orders according to procedure
  • Enters patient information into computer system test results appropriately and accurately
  • Documents communication of critical values as required
  • Remains current with departmental meeting minutes and other required reading.
  • Performs various computer duties to include:
  • Report generation and distribution.
  • Maintenance of printers.
  • Generation of computer error reports.
  • Generation of computer credits.
  • Reviews appropriate technical and/or operational procedures annually.
  • E. TechnologyMaintains computer skills, completes assigned maintenance tasks and stays reviews pertinent procedures as appropriate.

  • Performs laboratory and hospital computer functions with accuracy and promptness
  • Remains knowledgeable of downtime policies and procedures.
  • Performs routine maintenance as assigned.
  • Troubleshoots computer functions and equipment problems.
  • Reports instrument malfunctions and performs minor repairs.
  • Calls service representative or technical hot-line as necessary.
  • Attends in-service training on new equipment and procedures.
  • Participation in continuing education and self-study (5 hours per year).
  • Performs other work duties as assigned.

    Education

    High school diploma or equivalent required

    Experience

    One year laboratory experience preferred with clerical/computer skills Proficient in the use of word-processing of 50 WPM Proficient in the knowledge of medical terminology and ability to expand this knowledge with pathology terminology The assessment, care and treatment provided by the Laboratory will be consistent with the specific age related needs of the patient. The Laboratory divisions are competent to provide patient care to neonates/infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.
