A qualified Pathologists’ Assistant (PA) is a trained medical specialist whose primary responsibilities include examination, dissection, description, photography, and sampling for histology of tissue samples under the supervision of a staff anatomical pathologist. The PA is a graduate of an approved training program or has fulfilled the appropriate academic and training qualifications for an individual performing high-complexity testing, per CLIA-88 / CAP ANP.11600, 11605 regulations.
Pathology Assistant Responsibilities:
- Confirm accuracy of requisitions, accession, and coding of surgical specimens
- Obtain clinical history (including scans radiographs, etc.) as indicated
- Dictate gross anatomic features, dissect surgical specimens and submit sections for histological processing. Orient and ink specimens, dictate block/dissection guides, and record dissection diagrams as appropriate
- Select and submit tissue for special procedures (e.g. cultures, flow cytometry, frozen sections, electron microscopy, and immunofluorescence)
- Inspect equipment in the gross room and assist in the provision of adequate supplies and general cleanliness of the gross room suite
- Photograph pertinent gross specimens and microscopic slides, including the filing of photographs; assist in conferences involving pathology specimens
- Develop and maintain knowledge of safety procedures (e.g. proper disposal methods, material safety data sheets)
- Participate in continuous improvement activities
Requirements:
- This position requires a bachelor's degree in at least one of the core health sciences
- Requires certification as a Pathologist Assistant- ASCP Pathologists' Assistant (PA)
- At least 3 years full-time PA experience
