Responsibilities*

  • Performing and assuring appropriate specimen accessioning, summarization of patient?s medical history, gross description and examination of surgical specimens, submission of tissue samples for histologic and other testing, and process/preserve all gross specimens.
  • Set up and photo documentation of pertinent surgical specimens.
  • Performing frozen sections with cryostat and staining circuit maintenance.
  • Performing fetal examinations on specimens under the age of 27 weeks.
  • Assists with training of pathology residents and fellows.
  • Assists staff with procuring, logging and dissemination of tissue with research projects and other studies.
  • Provides an administrative role in management of workflow in the dissection labs and aids in QC/QA responsibilities.
  • Aids in supervision of histotechnology personnel, pathology residents and fellows in the dissection labs.
  • Aids in updating Master Control documentation including online cutting manual and other lab policies and procedures.
  • Participation in quality and safety programs/meetings as they pertain to the gross dissection labs.
  • Able to perform slide scanning using Leica LV1 slide scanner to aid in frozen section reporting.

Required Qualifications*

In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Pathologist Assistant program plus national certification as a pathologists assistant from the American Association of Pathologists Assistants (AAPA) and / or ASCP certification.

Candidate should also have:

  • Solid verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to professionally and collegiately interact with clinical community, administration and management.
  • Ability to use current techniques, computer programs and equipment in pathology
  • Solid understanding of histology and anatomic pathology

Work Schedule

This full time, 40 hour position is on the evening shift, hours are 2-10:30 pm, M-F.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
