Benesch is proud to announce the opening for a Patent Paralegalin our Chicago office! This position is hybrid and has work from home flexibility.
Position Summary:
The Patent Paralegal will assist in a wide range of administrative and procedural duties primarily related to the firm's US and/or foreign patent prosecution practice.
Essential Functions:
  1. Responsible for a wide range of administrative and procedural duties relating to the initial phases of filing patent applications, through the completion of the patent prosecution process, including electronic filings and maintenance of same.
  2. Prepare documents related to various phases of U.S. and Foreign patent prosecution, including but not limited to; information disclosure statements, formal documents, office action response shells and notice of allowance due diligence.
  3. Maintain and manage the prosecution docket; follow up on items to ensure due dates and deadlines are met from initial filings to issuance through renewals.
  4. Prepare correspondence with foreign associates regarding required documentation, ensuring deadlines are met and reporting PCT documents to clients.
  5. Provide direction and mentorship to incoming associates and IP team to ensure all patent matters are properly processed, maintained and reported.
  6. Responsible for understanding all aspects of USPTO and PCT filings, having working knowledge of how to resolve issues as they arise.
  7. Meet billable goals as established by practice management.

Additional Responsibilities:
  1. May require overtime as needed.
  2. Perform additional office support duties as assigned/requested.

Qualifications:
Paralegals should preferably hold a valid Paralegal certification, in addition to ten (10) years of patent prosecution experience. A firm understanding of electronic filings (both U.S. and foreign) in addition to IP docketing systems is required. Must have solid time management and organizational skills; high level of accuracy and attention to detail; self-motivated and pro-active; and have excellent customer service attitude.
