PRE-ADMISSION TESTING ASSISTANT

Looking for a rewarding position that allows you to work directly with patients preparing to have surgery in our Ambulatory Surgery Center? Join our team of talented individuals! In this position, you will assist patients in making sure they have the appropriate medical clearances and labwork needed prior to having surgery. You will communicate with patients ensuring that all information is received in a timely manner as well as communicate with the surgeon staff to ensure the health and safety of the patient is the top priority.

Position Purpose

The PAT Assistant is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and coordinating patient care from admission. The PAT Assistant is responsible for the achievement of patient outcomes in accordance with the mission of the facility. Responsible for conducting business and patient care activities consistent with the hospital's policy for Patient's Rights. Responsible for the discrete and confidential handling of all patient information whether written or spoken, and to be ever vigilant and sensitive to where and how any patient information is shared.


Interpersonal Relationships

As a representative of FACILITY, all comments, attitudes, actions, and behaviors have a direct affect on the facility's image and perceptions of quality service. Interaction with patients, family members, physicians, referral sources, affiliating schools, visitors, etc. must be in a manner that is friendly, supportive, courteous, respectful, cooperative, and professional. This behavior should promote an atmosphere of teamwork congruent with facility standards and guidelines to promote positive relations, and set an example for the staff.


Position Requirements

Licenses or Certifications: Current licensure to practice in the State of Ohio. Successful completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support Course; ACLS preferred and PALS preferred.


Education, Vocational Training and Experience

Current ACLS preferred and PALS certificate preferred.


Experience

Minimum of 2 years experience in PAT, ICU OR ER nursing preferred.

  • Job Knowledge
  • Assesses, plans, evaluates and ensures the implementation of the patient's care to achieve identified outcomes.
  • Assesses patient status on admission and on an ongoing basis.
  • Implements appropriate standards of care based on assessment data and patient's own goals. Goals are mutually set with the patient and family
  • Coordinates nursing interventions to enhance achievement of expected outcomes and to ensure readiness for discharge.
  • Ensures provision of patient care daily in an organized and timely manner.
  • Adheres to all facility policies and procedures when providing patient care.

  • Demonstrates ability to direct and provide for patient care in emergency situation.

  • Displays an understanding of each patient's cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological maturity in the assessments, treatment, and care undertaken.
  • Appropriately modifies approach to the patient based upon patient age utilizing a developmental perspective.
  • Provides appropriate interventions related to safety issues.
  • Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and competence of designated skills identified for position.
  • Clinical Activities
  • Participates in patient care activities and adheres to requirements of RN job description when providing patient care as evidenced by:
    • Admission assessment upon patients arrival
    • Documents response to nursing action
    • Treats patients and family with courtesy, respect and professionalism
    • Provides pre & post operative instructions, verbal and written to the patients understanding
    • Stocks unit and carries out unit routine, check crash cart and counts narcotics
    • Follow up phone calls and cards are sent to patients. Documents per unit policy . Follows surgery schedule and anticipates patient arrival
    • Responsible for patient's admission and preop care, holistic preparation for surgery considering all needs utilizing preference cards.
    • Documents all unusual occurrences and post-operative complications for QI follow up.
    • Frequent ongoing assessment of patients condition.
    • Prompt administration of pain and anesthesia nausea medications when indicated.
    • Quality and Customer Service
  • Works enthusiastically as a member of a team evidenced by:
    • Maintains active professional relationships with doctors and patients by assessing needs and levels of satisfaction with hospital services.
    • Make every effort to appease dissatisfied medical staff and/or patients.
    • Explains hospital policy and routine to patients so misunderstandings do not occur.

  • Demonstrates the ability to work well with other employees and assist in new employee training as evidenced by:
    • Assists in welcoming new employees and helping with orientation when appropriate.
    • Directs ancillary staff members to achieve the daily need of the department.
    • Encourages fellow employees to be productive when patient care activities are slow.
    • Maintains confidentiality for which they are privileged.
    • Resource and Inventory Management
  • Ensures proper use of resources (time and supplies) as evidenced by:
    • Careful use of supplies and medicines to avoid waste.
    • Reports to charge nurse when supplies are low and need ordering.
    • Keeps accurate time records
    • Stocks units with supplies/drugs as needed
    • Helps keep supplies neat and organized
    • Regulatory Compliance
  • Complies with state rules/regulations and the Joint Commission standards as evidenced by:
    • 100% of regulatory concerns or unusual occurrences are reported to supervisor nurse within 24 hours of occurrence.
    • When patient injury or disaster occurs, administration is notified immediately.
    • RN license and ACLS certification kept current and kept on file at the hospital
    • Safety
  • Maintain unit in safe condition as evidenced by cleared hallways, secured electrical wiring and reporting of broken equipment promptly. Adheres to all facility safety regulations and guidelines regarding patient safety as evidenced by:
    • Attends monthly staff meeting as documented in attendance records.
    • Identifies, corrects and reports unsafe conditions immediately

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Work is indoors in climate-controlled environment. Patient care environment with potential exposure to unpleasant odors, to blood and body fluids that may carry infection, to infectious disease, and to chemical and electrical hazards. Occasional exposure to outdoor climate.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical requirements for the position include the ability to frequently hear and communicate orally, see up close and at a distance, read and comprehend, stand, sit, walk, reach, handle, and feel objects. Ability to climb, pull, push, and kneel. Ability to push a gurney with 150 lb. patient. Maximum unassisted lift = over 100 lbs. Ability to wear lead apron and push heavy equipment.
