Job Duties
The Science Museum of Virginia seeks a Registrar/Collections Assistant to provide proper documentation and collections management best practices to the museum's broad permanent and educational collections, which include natural history specimens, geologic specimens, rail cars, aircraft, archival materials and other artifacts.
The Registrar/Collections Assistant will number, catalog, house, research, complete condition reports, take digital images and complete superficial cleaning of artifacts under the care of the Science Museum of Virginia which includes the Danville Science Center. This position maintains the data integrity of the museum's collections management software system, PastPerfect, by ensuring that all cataloging and inventory records adhere to museum cataloging standards. The Registrar/Collections Assistant will organize and inventory permanent and educational collection storage; update documentation and database records; process loan paperwork; process artifact transfers, long-term loans and deaccessions and document and dispose of these objects in accordance with Board policy and collections standards and procedures.
Please note that this is a part-time position and will be scheduled for an average of 29 hours a week with a maximum of 1500 hours in a 12-month period. No state benefits are provided.
Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a working knowledge of PastPerfect museum software, museum registration processes and standards as set by the American Alliance of Museums, strong computer skills, excellent written and spoken English language skills, superb attention to detail, outstanding organizational skills and the ability to work independently with little supervision. Some physical activity such as kneeling, climbing ladders and lifting up to 50 pounds is required.
Additional Considerations
Prior experience working in museum collections, archives or a curatorial department, related education or training.
A criminal Background Check is required for the successful candidate.
