DEFINITION
To advance the educational mission of the La Porte Historical Colored School House by conducting tours and providing educational information for the general public.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Recreation Superintendent.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Opening and closing the museum during posted hours as well as during planned tours
- Welcome visitors with a smile and warm greeting.
- Be enthusiastic, cheerful and willing to learn.
- Must have an interest in working with people, especially students, and be willing to become actively involved in the programs of the museum.
- Experience or education in history or teaching can be helpful, although not required.
- Conduct programs by greeting the groups and leading the tours and programs.
- Maintain a clean and tidy museum both inside and outside.
- Respond to inquiries or requests for information from interested community groups and citizens.
- Participate in center meetings; assist in evaluating program techniques and content.
- Prepare and submit program and event attendance reports.
- May be required to perform general clerical duties such as light typing, filing, and record keeping.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Keep track of all hours worked and submit those to the Recreation Superintendent in a timely manner.
- Commit to working up to four weekends per month with occasional weekday evenings.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
For indefinite periods of time - mobility within an office and field environment; exposure to dust, mites, and radiation hazards; exposure to constant noise and extreme heat; writing; walking; typing; twisting body; stooping; standing; squatting; sorting; sitting; seeing; pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying up to 50 pounds; filing; cleaning; reading; decision making; reaching above shoulder level; using both hands for simple and firm grasping; clarity of hearing; communicating clearly and effectively, in person, by two-way radio, and by telephone; fine finger manipulation; operation of a personal computer, typewriter, and calculator.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Techniques of supervising children during recreation activities
- General program content for tours of the School House
- Recreational, cultural, and social needs of the community and museum visitors
- Modern office practices, procedures and equipment
Ability to:
- Assist in coordinating, organizing, and implementing museum tours and educational sessions.
- Distribute publicity concerning new or ongoing recreation offerings.
- Work with people with disabilities, children, and adults in administering tours of the School House.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Some experience in history or teaching will be helpful, although not required. Passion for teaching and entertaining groups of museum visitors.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid Texas Driver's License preferred but not required.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within three months an Emergency First Aid and a valid C.P.R. Certification & AED Administration.
