Position Summary
Skagit Valley College (SVC) is accepting applications for a part-time Men's Basketball Assistant Coach. This position works with the Head Coach, Athletic Director, Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) Athletic Commissioners and campus departments. The Assistant Coach assists with teaching basketball techniques for collegiate competition and ensures compliance with all NWAC rules and regulations in areas including but not limited to: fundraising, recruiting, eligibility, schedules, travel, and preparing student athletes for competition. SVC is a member of the Northwest Athletic Conference and currently offers nine intercollegiate sports.

Applicants who are hired into mixed-duty roles may be subject to overtime provisions and modified work schedules. This position may work evenings, weekends, and require occasional overnight travel.
Nestled between the Cascade Mountains and Puget Sound in the northwest corner of Washington State, Skagit Valley College is located 60 miles north of Seattle and 80 miles south of Vancouver, BC. SVC was established in 1926 in Mount Vernon. Operating as one college with several campuses and centers, SVC serves Skagit, Island and San Juan Counties with campuses in Mount Vernon and Oak Harbor, a center in Friday Harbor, and a Marine Manufacturing and Technology Center in Anacortes.

Duties and Responsibilities
Head coaching leadership
  • Assist in teaching basketball techniques and skills at a level appropriate for collegiate competition
  • Assist the Men's Basketball program, conducting the program in accordance with the NWAC and college rules and regulations
  • Serve as a role model to assist the team members in developing and displaying appropriate behavior and sportsmanship expected of athletic teams and individuals representing SVC
Coaching and College/community relations
  • Promote SVC athletic programs in our community college district.
  • Collaborate with Athletic staff to foster partnerships between Men's Basketball and local and campus communities
  • Promote academics and involvement in the community
Coaching administrative duties
  • Help Develop and organize a comprehensive practice schedule
  • Recruit student-athletes in accordance with college policies and Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) regulations
  • Submit advance travel requests and secure lodging
  • Fundraise to supplement the budget, support and partner with the Athletics unit and its activities (including offering camps/clinics, sports auction)
Other related duties
  • Support and monitor the academic progress of student-athletes
  • Assist with the advising and registration of student athletes
  • Participate in departmental meetings and communicate information to student-athletes in a timely manner
  • Assist with and prepare field for practices and games
  • Other related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of and ability to teach the sport;
  • Strong communication, organizational, and management skills;
  • Knowledge of the NWAC rules and regulations or willingness to become knowledgeable;
  • Ability to demonstrate key technical competencies;
  • Understanding of and experience working with people of diverse socioeconomic, academic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds;
  • Ability to promote a philosophy of student success;
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing student needs and maintain consistent communication with supervisors and support staff in the Athletic Department.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree, equivalent education, or higher in Sports Science, Physical Education, Coaching, or related Athletics field OR equivalent experience totaling two (2) years of successful coaching experience.
  • Successful basketball coaching experience.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Sports Science, Physical Education, Coaching, or related Athletics field.
  • Experience recruiting athletes.
  • Competency and experience working in a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological, gender and racial/ethnic backgrounds and those with physical, emotional and or learning disabilities.
  • Experience working closely with students to achieve their educational goals.

Salary, Benefits, Conditions of Employment, Application Procedure
Salary and Benefits:
  • The Assistant Coach is paid via stipend of $2,500 for the season.
  • This position is ineligible for benefits. *Benefits may become available in the event an employee is hire into an additional benefits-eligible position.
  • Eligibility for benefits is in compliance with state rules and regulations.
