Job Title: Part-time Lead Beginning Teacher Induction Coach, Winston-Salem TEACH

Job Type: Contractor

Reports to: Dr.Kate Allman, Executive Director of Winston-Salem TEACH

Summary:

Winston-Salem TEACH is seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to join our team as a Lead Beginning Teacher Induction Coach contractor. The Lead Beginning Teacher (BT) Induction Coach will work closely with the WS-TEACH Executive Director and Leadership Team to design and implement a research-based Beginning Teacher coaching program aligned with the goals of a funded U.S. Department of Education Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) grant. The coaching program aims to support newly-hired WS/FCS teachers (elementary, special, and secondary) during their first years of teaching.

This position involves one-on-one mentoring, facilitating professional development sessions, and conducting classroom observations to offer constructive feedback. Additionally, the Lead BT Coach will work closely with the Executive Director to ensure coaching and professional development aligns to the funding agencies’ goals and will serve as the initial contact for other WS-TEACH BT coaches in the event of concerns or crises during the coaching program. The ideal candidate will possess strong mentoring and coaching skills, a deep understanding of effective teaching practices, and the ability to create a positive and supportive environment for beginning educators.

This is a two-year, grant-funded position supported by a multi-year grant from the Department of Education Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) and may be considered for funding beyond the initial two-year term.

Winston-Salem TEACH is an inter-institutional partnership between Winston-Salem State University, Wake Forest University, Salem College, and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools (WS/FCS) designed to recruit, prepare, and retain highly-effective, equity-centered educators to teach in high-need WS/FC schools. This specific contractor position will be paid through Winston-Salem State University.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and WS-TEACH Leadership Team to design and implement an evidence-based Beginning Teacher coaching program.
  • Provide one-on-one mentoring and coaching to newly-hired teachers, offering support and guidance in navigating their first years of teaching in WS/FCS.
  • Design and facilitate professional development sessions tailored to the specific needs of Beginning Teachers, focusing on classroom management, instructional strategies, and effective communication.
  • Conduct classroom observations to provide constructive feedback on teaching practices, classroom management, and lesson planning, fostering continuous improvement for Beginning Teachers.
  • Assist Beginning Teachers in accessing and utilizing instructional resources, curriculum materials, and technology tools that enhance the teaching and learning experience.
  • Foster a collaborative environment by facilitating regular meetings and discussions among Beginning Teachers, encouraging the sharing of experiences and best practices.
  • Provide support and guidance during challenging situations, helping Beginning Teachers navigate difficult moments and finding effective solutions.
  • Meet and communicate regularly with the Executive Director to ensure fidelity of coaching program implementation.
  • Maintain accurate records of coaching sessions, observations, and progress, ensuring data-driven decision-making for ongoing improvement.
  • Serve as the initial contact for other WS-TEACH BT Coaches if concerns or crises arise during the coaching program.
  • Assist the Executive Director in facilitating regular meetings with the other BT Induction coaches.
  • Collaborate with part-time BT Induction Coaches, the Executive Director of WS-TEACH, WS-TEACH personnel, and school-based personnel.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Education or a related field.
  • A minimum of 8 years of successful public school teaching experience in a high-need Elementary Education (grades K-6), Special Education (grades K-12), or Secondary Education (grades 9-12), preferably in a high-need school.
  • Proven experience in mentoring or coaching, with a focus on supporting Beginning Teachers.
  • Strong understanding of pedagogical practices, curriculum development, and classroom management strategies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback in a positive and supportive manner.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to meet the varying needs of Beginning Teachers.
  • Knowledge of current educational trends and best practices.
