Job description

Department:  Fire 

Pay:  $20.00 per hour starting salary. Starting salary negotiable based on experience, education, and certifications.  

Work Schedule: 20 hours or less per week

This position performs technical investigative work conducting and coordinating investigations into fires/explosives, weapons of mass destruction, hazardous materials incidents, public nuisance, and other criminal violations of laws and regulations in unincorporated areas of Sedgwick County and within municipalities. This position performs fire investigation training department-wide.  This position also assists with Fire Prevention education and outreach services, fire and life safety plans review, and seeking abatement of fire hazards in the unincorporated Sedgwick County and municipalities on occasion.

 

Code Enforcement and Investigation

  • Investigate buildings to locate hazardous conditions fire code violations, and enforce code by issuing citations for violations as needed
  • Investigate fires to determine cause of fire and origin, including collecting and preserving evidence, conducting interviews, and completing investigative research and data collection
  • Write detailed reports of fire inspections and investigations, including code violations and corrective recommendations; file reports with the courts when needed
  • Perform quality control on incoming Fire Prevention reports
  • Present evidence to District Attorney to obtain arrest warrants and/or citations; and testify in court when needed
  • Prepare affidavits, and conduct follow-ups at the direction of the DA Prosecutor.
  • Answer fire alarms
  • Maintain departmental vehicle and issued equipment, and assist with overall duties within the Fire Marshal Bureau
  • Write reports on complaints and inquiries received by Fire Marshal’s Office, and advise corrections needed to maintain compliance with codes and standards
  • Present and explain fire code requirements and Fire Prevention information to contractors and developers, fire service personnel, and the general public

 

Education

  • Facilitate safety presentations to the public, including schools, churches, civic groups, and community service groups on topics related to Fire Prevention and safety
  • Facilitate trainings and provide training materials to Fire Department staff on how safety messages to the public
  • Conduct classes for operational personnel in all aspects of Fire Prevention, including Inspection Principals, Fire Origin

 

Minimum Qualifications: Associate’s degree with an emphasis in Fire Science. Education may be substituted for experience, with one year of education for one year of experience. Two years of full-time experience directly related to Fire Prevention/fire investigation. Per Sedgwick County Policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid Kansas driver’s license without restrictions, and current proof of automobile insurance. Kansas EMT. State Fire Investigator CFI I.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Associates degree in Fire Science. Five years of full-time experience directly related to Fire Prevention. Kansas EMT, Kansas DL, ICC Inspector I or equivalent, State Fire Investigator CFI II.
