The Animal Care Attendant’s essential duties and responsibilities include the following Responsible for maintaining the animal housing areas and the shelter, in its entirety, in a clean and sanitary condition. This includes thorough morning cleaning and disinfecting, as well as ongoing cleaning and maintenance throughout the day. Runs and cages will be checked before the employees’ lunch break and before the end of their shift to ensure the animals are clean and cared for prior to staff leaving. Fresh water must be available and easily accessible to each animal at all times. Adheres to protocols for Animal Care, kennel maintenance, sanitation, parasite and disease control, and other Animal Care practices within the policies and guidelines of Helping Strays Treats everyone with respect at all times Must continually and consistently maintain a humane and caring attitude toward the animals in their care. Caretakers must be knowledgeable about proper handling and restraint of animals. Neglect or any instances of animal cruelty will not be tolerated and will result in immediate termination of employment. Responsible for careful observation of animals in runs and cages throughout the day, to ensure that the animals are safe, healthy, and comfortable Responsible for promptly notifying the Animal Care Supervisor or Shelter Director if any animal shows signs of stress, injury, or illness Responsibilities may include assisting with the prompt and proper receiving and kenneling of new animals brought into the animal shelter Responsible for assisting guests in the kennel and cattery seeking to adopt an animal. Caretakers are expected to be courteous to the public and give them accurate information about the animals in our care and Helping Strays. All records shall be maintained accurately and kept current in the software programs and/or files Will make notable efforts to attend seminars and continuing education opportunities that will further knowledge of animal welfare and enrich the experience as an employee of the organization. Responsible for understanding the duties that volunteers have agreed to perform at the Shelter and provide guidance and assistance, as needed, in compliance with Helping Strays’ protocols and procedures Participates in adoption and community initiatives, and/or industry meetings as assigned Represents Helping Strays in a professional manner at all times Performs other duties as assigned Qualifications and Education Requirements * High school diploma or equivalent Customer service experience Available to work weekends, evenings, and holiday shifts as needed Flexible and adaptable Excellent oral and written communication skills Excellent attention to detail Able to work independently or as part of a team Physical Demands While performing the functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, kneel, and/or sit, for long durations. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Working conditions are in a kennel environment with frequent exposure to laboratory conditions including hazardous materials, unfavorable fumes and odors, and working with animal body fluids and infectious diseases, and loud noises.
