About the Role:
Under the direction of the Park Maintenance Supervisor, you will perform all functions necessary for the construction and maintenance of the City's parks, greenways, roadway boulevards, building grounds, and park facilities. This position may also be assigned to assist the Streets divisions in performing snow removal and repair and maintenance of roadways. Decisions on day-to-day activities are made independently. Supervision received is limited. Daily work plans are discussed with a daily review of progress. There is frequent interaction with the public and other public works staff. Part of an on-call rotation must be able to respond to the worksite within forty (40) minutes.

SALARY RANGE:
Parks Maintenance Worker with CDL $26.18/hr - $29.92/hr
Parks Maintenance Worker without CDL $23.94/hr - $27.36/hr
Responsibilities
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.
Essential Functions:
  • Perform the necessary maintenance for the proper upkeep of parklands such as mowing grass, planting, cutting, and trimming trees, shrubbery, and flowers.
  • Make repairs and perform maintenance to city vehicles and equipment.
  • Empty Park trash and recycling receptacles.
  • Clean Park shelters and restrooms.
  • Maintain hiking trails, roadway boulevards and grounds around city-owned buildings and park or recreation facilities. Keep maintenance records on park grounds and facilities.
  • Groom and prepare ball diamonds layout and paint athletic fields.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as end loaders, bulldozers, dump trucks, and backhoes in the construction and landscaping of park areas.
  • Operate chain saws and other power hand tools.
  • Remove trash, leaves, and other debris, and applies herbicides.
  • Assist with directing and training seasonal staff on the proper performance of park maintenance activities.
  • Operate snow removal, salting, and/or sanding equipment to remove snow from City parking lot surfaces and bike trails.
  • Assist the Parks Maintenance Supervisor in preventive maintenance programs and helps keep records to ensure that the City's equipment is being utilized in the most efficient manner possible.
  • Conduct necessary surveys of parkland for planning and construction purposes.
  • Conduct Park safety inspections and implement necessary repairs.
  • Assist promoters of large community events in proper use of park facilities.
  • Make recommendations for the park's development budget to the Parks Maintenance Supervisor.
  • During summer months will assist with Splash Pad maintenance, and in winter months will assist with Ice Rink maintenance.
  • Must be available to work outside of normal work hours for emergencies and snow removal.

Other Functions:
  • Operate snow removal, salting, and/or sanding equipment to remove snow from City roadways.
  • Clean storm drains and culverts.
  • Make roadway repairs, perform concrete work.
  • Assists with tasks required to maintain the proper functioning of the City's water and sanitary sewer system.

Minimum Qualifications
Supervisory Requirements:
  • None

Education and/or Experience Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalency desired.
  • Three years of experience operating mowers, large trucks, chain saws, and other similar equipment is required.
  • Forestry experience desired.
  • General vehicle maintenance and electrical repair experience highly desired.

Licenses, Certifications, etc.
  • ASE certification desired.
  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin Driver's License with CDL endorsement is preferred but not required.
  • Certified Pool Operators Certification desired.

Special Requirements
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge and ability to safely operate heavy equipment, such as tractors, mowers, and pick-up trucks, for the construction and maintenance of parks grounds and facilities required.
  • Must be able to work at heights up to 75 feet, utilizing ladders and bucket trucks.
  • Advanced skill using standard hand tools and chainsaws required.
  • Prior experience operating large mowers required.
  • Knowledge of vehicle, equipment and small engine repair desired.
  • Construction trades and surveying techniques desired.
  • Prior experience operating road construction equipment desired.
  • Ability to identify and analyze problems, evaluate alternative solutions, and make sound judgments, especially in stressful situations required.
  • Must be able to work in an efficient and safe manner.
  • Ability to foster cooperation and teamwork among peers required.
