Description

The Parks Maintenance Division of the Parks and Recreation Department has openings for a Parks Groundskeeper. The positions will be filled as Parks Groundskeeper I or II depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant.

Parks Groundskeeper I - Starting salary: $16.58/hr.

Maintains parks and trails. Prepares athletic fields; maintains turf and plants; and operates equipment, performs semi-skilled building maintenance functions.

The essential functions of the job are not limited to those listed in the job description. The City retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.


  • Prepares, maintains and repairs grounds and parks by operating and maintaining equipment; mows and trims properties; maintains athletic fields; maintains buildings and facilities; and provides emergency response in the event of bad weather and/or environmental issues.
  • Maintains the trails by trimming and/or removing trees; removes litter; and provides emergency tree work.
  • Assists with special events by setting up equipment and furniture for special events; works assigned events; and cleans up after events.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES
  • Attends and engages in training on various levels.
  • May occasionally act as lead worker or provide direction to inmate and seasonal crews or part-time staff.
  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as assigned.

Education and Experience
High School or GED and one to three years’ grounds maintenance experience.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above
Certifications/Licenses


  • First Aid/CPR
  • Pesticide Application
  • Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record according to City criteria.

Job Knowledge
Intermediate knowledge to perform most work in normal situations. Comprehension of standard situations and includes knowledge of most of the significant aspects of the subject.
Reading
Basic: Ability to recognize meaning of common two- or three-syllable words.
Writing
Basic: Ability to write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses.
Math
Basic: Ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
Communication Skills
Decisions regarding interpretation of existing policies may be made. Contacts may involve stressful, negative interactions requiring high levels of tact and the ability to respond to aggressive interpersonal interactions. Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas.

Normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. There is a choice of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. Performance reviewed periodically.

Fiscal Responsibilities
No budgetary/fiscal responsibility.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Performs essentially the same work as those directed. Includes oversight of quality, training, instructing and scheduling work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS


  • Work requires heavy physical effort, exerting 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly.
  • Adequate vision, hearing and talking to drive and communicate effectively with others.
  • Constant standing, walking, carrying, pushing/pulling, handling, and fine dexterity.
  • Frequent lifting, reaching, bending, twisting, and balancing.

NON-PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment, tools and other resources, including work time.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is expected.
  • May experience frequent time pressure, change of tasks, working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment.
  • May experience occasional irregular work schedule/overtime.
  • May rarely perform multiple tasks simultaneously.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE
Typically requires use of common office equipment, including computer and related software and hardware; groundskeeping equipment such as mower/push mower, trimmers, pick-up truck, chain saw, leaf blower, turf cutter, backpack chemical sprayer, hand tools, tiller; and any other equipment as appropriate or required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is performed outdoors, in the shop or a recreation center where there is frequent exposure to mechanical hazards and to occasional physical danger or chemical hazard. There is rare exposure to fire hazards.
The employee is expected to use appropriate protective equipment for the assigned task (hearing and eye protection, safety vest, steel toe shoes, etc.); and any other equipment as apparent or assigned.
