Job description

JOB INFORMATION

non-exempt; no benefits; part-time; varied days and hours depending on program needs.
Parks and Recreation staff may include but not limited to, various Instructors, Sports Referees, Camp Aides / Counselors / Assistant Directors / Directors, Parks Leaders / Aides, etc. Areas of focus include but not limited to: basketball, flag-football, t-ball, soccer, multi sports, volleyball, cooking, dance/aerobic, nature and history educational programs, recreation camps and programs, etc. Class sessions are located at various Frederick County parks and Recreation Centers. Location, schedule and duration of each class/program will be determined as appropriate. Necessary equipment will be provided by the Division of Parks and Recreation. Supervision is received from a Recreation Supervisor or Recreation Specialist.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and prepare for activities
  • Lead small group activities (12-15 children)
  • Assure the return and condition of issued equipment and supplies
  • Help to open and close the center daily (including set-up and clean-up)
  • Compile and maintain record-keeping related to each class (e.g. attendance)
  • Perform other related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum 16 years of age
  • Experience providing related instruction is preferred
  • Ability to effectively prepare and carry out lesson plans (as appropriate)
  • Ability to effectively lead and supervise large groups in recreational activities
  • Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills in order to conduct classes and perform related record-keeping
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working/teaching relationships with co-workers, participants and their family members; school personnel and the general public
  • Physical requirements include the ability to actively participate in sports or activity

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION / EXAMINATION PROCESS

  • Current certification in Community First Aid and CPR, or the ability to become certified before the program begins (certification must be maintained throughout employment)
  • Ability to provide own transportation as needed
  • Ability and willingness to participate in planning and training sessions


EXAMINATION PROCESS

1) An evaluation of training and experience
2) One or more interviews
3) A pre-employment background investigation


Position is not eligible to receive benefits with exception to the 457 Plan as listed below.

Contributions are invested at the employee's direction into one or more of the variety of investment options offered by the plan.
