nvisioning, planning, building, operating and maintaining a transportation system for the City of Oakland-in partnership with local transit providers and other agencies-and assuring safe, equitable, and sustainable access and mobility for residents, businesses, and visitors.
As a member of the Oakland Department of Transportation, in the Safe Street Maintenance Division, this position is part of the meter maintenance team responsible for the City's more than 4,000 single-space Parking Meters and 567 multi-space parking kiosks. As a member of the overall group responsible for the installation, replacement, and maintenance of City traffic signs, striping, and legends, you will be part of a team that keeps the City of Oakland safe and running efficiently and effectively. This dynamic group also supports a project delivery pipeline by working with on-call contractors for the responsive and efficient construction of striping-only projects in order to provide organized traffic flow and clearly marked parking stalls and areas for vehicles to park. The ideal candidate will be able to perform repairs, rebuild and test various equipment, and install Parking Meters located in a variety of locations around the city and in a repair shop.

What you will typically be responsible for:
  • Maintaining Parking Meter mechanisms, including repairing and replacing any and all portions of the machines (head, body, housing, etc.).
  • Clearing jams in Parking Meters.
  • Removing and/or replacing meter heads.
  • Testing, inspecting, and recording work performed on meters to adhere to specifications.
  • Logging service requests and work orders.
  • Installing, painting, and numbering parking machines.
  • Inventorying new and used parts.
  • Servicing tools and equipment and inspecting them for safety and mechanical defects.

Working for the City of Oakland Any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the following minimum qualifications is acceptable:

Education:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Experience:

One (1) year of mechanical repair experience. Experience repairing small mechanical devices such as meters, office and business machines, watch repair, clockworks, timing devices, or electrical instruments is desirable.
License or Certificate / Other Requirements:


Possession of a valid California Driver's License.

The Recruitment Process:


The City of Oakland works with a Civil Service system. Applicants apply online, and HR staff reviews their experience, education, and training listed on the application against the "minimum qualifications" listed for each position.

Candidates who demonstrate that they meet the minimum qualification requirements are then invited to participate in an assessment process (or testing) to measure their knowledge, skills, and abilities in job-related areas.

Candidates who do not demonstrate that they meet the minimum qualification requirements will have an opportunity to request a final review. Candidates must request a final review within 5 business days of being notified that they did not meet the minimum qualifications.

In the final review, candidates may clarify information already provided on their application. No additional work history, education, or certifications will be accepted. Any decisions made during this review process will be final.

For this recruitment, all qualified applicants will be invited to participate in an online multiple-choice assessment. The assessment is tentatively scheduled to take place between March 11, 2024 and March 18, 2024. Instructions will be emailed to all qualified candidates.

Candidates who pass each stage in the process will be placed on an eligible list. Some candidates may receive extra points, for example, if you are a Veteran with an honorable discharge, or if you are a current City of Oakland resident. If you're applying to a "restricted" posting and you are eligible as a current City employee, you may also receive additional points for your City service. Extra points are only applied to passing scores, so if you do not pass every element of the testing process, you cannot use extra points to pass.

  • Other benefits include a Flexible Spending Account, Wellness Program, Employee Assistance Program, Tuition Reimbursement, Life Insurance up to $200k & Employee Training.
