Summary These positions may be filled for a six month seasonal period, but can vary due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: May 2024. Rate of pay clarification: GS-05 - $22.28 per hour GS-07 - $25.36 per hour For more park(s) information, select "Learn more about this agency" below: Responsibilities Provide Emergency Medical Services in both front country and remote backcountry settings. Provide care as an Emergency Medical Technician or Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician. Utilize the Incident Command System (ICS) during emergency response efforts. Conduct climbing patrols, searches, and rescues in a high alpine environment. Climb un-roped in 4th and easy 5th class alpine terrain. Lead technical ice climbing routes at WI3/AI3 or harder and technical alpine climbing routes at 5.9 or harder. Respond to emergency incidents carrying equipment loads of up to 50 pounds at elevations up to 14,000 feet and perform ground searches that require hiking long distances (up to 20 miles in a day) in mountainous terrain. Perform technical and non-technical carry-outs of patients in backcountry settings. Work with helicopters in mountain search and rescue operations including short-haul operations. Provide climbing route and conditions information to visitors and issue backcountry permits and educate visitors on permit regulations, wilderness ethics and leave no trace practices. Manage backcountry impacts by monitoring, evaluating and mitigating potential resource degradation issues. Lead others during helicopter rescues and during high-angle, technical rope rescue in an alpine environment. Lead others during lost-person incidents in backcountry settings. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You may be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. If selected for a position/location that requires search and rescue, emergency response, use of firearms, or watercraft operation, you will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. If selected for a position/location required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Some positions require certification to perform emergency medical response. Level of certification may vary dependent on location. Must possess or be able to obtain a NPS Type II Law Enforcement Commission. Must pass the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB) prior to start date. Pre-employment medical exam and drug testing are required. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. Mandatory Minimum Age Requirement: This position has a mandatory requirement that applicants must be 21 years of age or older. Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/05/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. SELECTIVE FACTORS: Mandatory Climbing Skills: Applicants must have led or shared leads on at least five Grade IV 5.9 (or higher) traditional rock climbs, led or shared leads on ice climbs rated, at minimum, Water Ice 3 (WI3) or Alpine Ice 3 (AI3), and aid climbs rated Aid 2 (A2) or Clean Aid 2 (C2). To be considered for this position, you must list in your resume or other application materials the names of the climbs and the corresponding grades and ratings that satisfy the above requirements. Please list any additional technical rock, ice, and/or alpine climbing experience and your most difficult technical rock, alpine ice, or mixed climbs. (MUST SUPPORT IN RESUME OR SEPARATE ATTACHMENT OR YOU WILL BE RATED INELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION) AND Mandatory Law Enforcement Commission: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria by the entrance-on-duty (EOD) date to be considered for these positions: Currently hold, or previously held (within the past three years), a National Park Service Seasonal (Level II) or full (Level I) law enforcement commission, or equivalent within the past three years. Successful completion a Seasonal Law Enforcement Training Program during the last three years but have not yet received a National Park Service Seasonal (Level II) Law Enforcement Commission. Will successfully complete a Seasonal Law Enforcement Training Program by the entrance on duty date from one of the approved participating academies found at https://www.anpr.org/sletp.php. NOTE: This is not regular police officer training. You MUST certify in your supporting documents the possession of at least one of the above criteria. Include your commission number with expiration date, or your anticipated graduation date from an approved NPS Seasonal Law Enforcement Academy within your resume. AND Mandatory Emergency Response Certification: Applicants to the GS-5 grade level must possess an Emergency Medical Responder, First Responder, Wilderness First Responder, or Outdoor Emergency Care Certification or higher. Applicants to the GS-07 grade level must possess an Emergency Medical Technician or Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician Certification or higher.(MUST INCLUDE TYPE OF CERTIFICATION AND EXPIRATION DATE ON YOUR RESUME OR ATTACH A COPY OF YOUR CERTIFICATION WITH YOUR APPLICATION OR YOU WILL BE RATED INELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION). In addition to possessing all of the selective factors listed above, applicants must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: For the GS-05 grade level: A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position.
