Job description

General Description

The Parks, Recreation, & Forestry Department is seeking a Park Ranger I to provide care and maintenance of all Wildlife Sanctuary (WLS) buildings, grounds, exhibits, landscaping, and trails with special attention given to the public areas and an emphasis on safety. This includes responsibility of routine maintenance of exterior and interior systems of all WLS areas.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. plus additional hours for rotating evenings, weekends, holidays, and after hours security and maintenance call-ins.
No residency requirement.

Examples of Duties

  • Completes routine facility maintenance and assists Ranger II with all grounds maintenance, including but not limited to trimming along parking lots, shorelines and trails, maintaining trail surface, branch/litter/leaf removal and mulching. Leads and coordinates facility/building maintenance duties including, but not limited to basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, roofing, and masonry knowledge.
  • Responsible for daily park operations including opening and closing of park buildings, trails, and facilities. Assists with other projects, such as butchering and animal cage construction.
  • Leads and coordinates all facility projects coordinating with internal and external staff/contractors. Delegates responsibilities and establishes needs and job timelines.
  • Maintains overall facility cleanliness and ensures/monitors safety of all public and staff areas, exhibits, walkways, and buildings.
  • Operates and maintains City equipment including, but not limited to snow blowers, trucks, tractors, skid steer, mowers, chain saws, and various power tools.
  • Provides routine monitoring and maintenance of facility operating systems including, but not limited to individual building(s) HVAC systems, security equipment, A/V equipment, and boiler system(s). Demonstrates ability to learn and utilize software platforms running WLS systems.
  • Responds promptly and professionally to all staff and public concerns with minimal to no disruption to park visitors (where applicable). This includes, but is not limited to custodial duties, security monitoring, event and/or room set-up, cleaning, and tear down.
  • Maintains accurate and current plant inventory records including various schedules, purchase orders, pest control records, and detailed plant collection information.
  • Responds to special repairs and emergency situations.
  • Works with, and may lead, Seasonal Maintenance employees, community service groups, volunteers, service clubs, environmental clubs, and scouts, etc. as directed.
  • Coordinates with Ranger II and other PRF divisions to complete WLS grounds, facility, exhibit, equipment, and vehicle maintenance as directed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Associate's Degree in related field.
  • Three years of experience in facility maintenance. Experience in commercial landscape maintenance, park operations, and/or facility operation management preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.

A combination of equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Has basic working knowledge of electrical systems, plumbing, masonry, roofing, HVAC, and general carpentry practices. Ability to accomplish various in-house duties safely and efficiently as assigned.
  • Basic working knowledge of or the ability to learn federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to public facility management. Good knowledge of safety practices relative to facility management and maintenance.
  • Ability to learn, implement, and operate basic working knowledge of all wildlife sanctuary systems including, but not limited to HVAC, boilers, waterfalls, and furnace operation. Able to demonstrate these abilities (once established) and utilize software, maintain maintenance schedule for all sanctuary systems, and keep staff appraised of parameters they may need to follow in their respective work sites.
  • Considerable skill and ability to operate various power tools and equipment including, but not limited to tractor and implements, large vehicles, table saw/chain saw security systems, and computer programs related to job duties.
  • Ability to proficiently utilize a computer and the required software. Ability to read, write, and perform math commensurate with field of responsibility and required administrative job duties.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, departments, volunteers, and the general public. Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work rotating evenings, weekends, holidays, and after hours security and maintenance call-ins.

Physical Requirements
Ability to perform the following activities:
  • Occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, crawling, and stooping.
  • Ability to reach, climb, bend, stoop, and maneuver on slippery surfaces and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to work in varied environmental conditions with a variety of plants and animals.
