At the GS-09 Level: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent at the next lower grade (GS-07) in Federal service. Specialized experience may include work as a Park Ranger developing and implementing education and interpretation outreach programs; designing or amending interpretive materials; identifying issues and proposing solutions; patrol and ensuring compliance from visitors at recreation sites; or experience in managing employees and assigning work; OR 2 full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education or a master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the occupation; OR an equivalent combination of the specialized experience and graduate education described above.
Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level.
Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary office work to field work. Field work may occur in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, snow covered, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces. The work of the position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads; walking over rough terrain or inclines; paddling, rowing, or otherwise operating watercraft; standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching, and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, backpacking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Work requires safe operation of 4x4 vehicles on unimproved roads and the physical stamina and ability to maintain and/or repair trails, trailheads, fencing, and other facilities in the field.
Work Environment: Work is performed in both an office and field environment. Field work may occur in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for up to two weeks in duration. During the summer months, temperatures can be above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. In winter, work may be required in temperatures at or below freezing.Education: This position does not fall under a Group Coverage Standard for this series. There are Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for this series.
Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR): Experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Park guide or tour leader.
  • Law enforcement or investigative work.
  • Archeological or historical preservation research work.
  • Forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area.
  • Management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations.
OR
Graduate Education: Major study -- natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled.
This position allows for education to be substituted for specialized experience (see qualification section for education requirements). If using education to qualify - You MUST submit a copy of ALL your college transcripts or a list of ALL college courses that include hours and grades from an accredited U.S. college/university. Upon selection, official transcripts must be received prior to appointment. If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
