Why does the job exist?

This position is assigned to Bluewater Lake State Park (BLSP). This position is primarily responsible for assisting park visitors, patrolling the park and enforcing rules and regulations to include the New Mexico Boat Act. This position focuses on providing general patrol and enforcement of park rules and regulations, and maintaining park facilities, grounds and equipment to include boats. This position will also be responsible for general supervision, training and assigning jobs of seasonal and park volunteers. This position is responsible for monitoring park operations, performing general park functions of the park administration and fee enhancement and fulfill managerial requirements when the manager is on days off or is on vacation. This position will develop and present interpretive/education programs for park visitors, school groups and other community groups. The position will coordinate and schedule these programs with local schools, youth groups and other entities. This position will implement, track and monitor education and enforcement programs presented in order to provide information and data weekly, monthly, and annually in order to effectively report and measure program success.

How does it get done?

The applicant will be required to perform a myriad of duties to include patrolling Bluewater Lake, present interpretive programs to the public and other employees, enforcing the New Mexico Boat Act, and the general care and maintenance of equipment and facilities. The incumbent will be required to perform many of these duties in unpredictable and extreme weather conditions throughout the year. Responsibilities also include other assignments determined by park management to ensure the safety and success of Bluewater Lake State Park.

Visitors throughout the State of New Mexico and surrounding states, who are boaters, campers, hikers, birders and fishermen. For United States Coast Guard and State of New Mexico.
Internal and external customers, visitors throughout the state of New Mexico and surrounding states who are campers, hikers, and boaters that come to visit the park for a variety of reasons. Local community businesses in surrounding areas of the park.

Ideal Candidate

Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Criminal Justice or Wildlife Management from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of experience in parks and recreation management, natural resources, biology, environmental sciences, forestry, criminal justice and/or wildlife management. Must be a certified NM peace officer.
¿ The ideal candidate will have a strong working knowledge of parks and recreation management with experience in Law Enforcement.
¿ The candidate must be able to perform in stressful situations requiring prompt decision making with significant consequences.
¿ The candidate must have excellent communication, organizational skills, and be able to provide outstanding customer service.
¿ (MEO) The ideal candidate will have extensive boating experience in various weather conditions.

Minimum Qualification

Associates degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Criminal Justice or

Employment Requirements

Incumbent must submit to and pass an extensive background investigation and the prescribed physical fitness, medical and psychological examinations. Must be a certified Peace Officer. Must be eligible for certification by waiver of previous training in accordance with provisions of Section 29-1-10 NMSA 1978. As a safety sensitive Law Enforcement position, incumbent will be subject to pre-employment, random, and reasonable suspicion drug testing.
  • Must be willing to accept assignment/transfer to another geographic location.
  • Moderate to extensive travel in region/statewide area.
  • Incumbent is required to live in park housing, if available.
  • Weekend and holiday work required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.

Working Conditions

This position is a Law Enforcement position and requires the incumbent to be in optimum physical condition. Lifting, bending, standing running, are above average. This position is placed in strenuous situations where physical strength may be necessary to restrain, or stop criminal activity. This position works outdoors 70% of the time and is exposed to machinery, adverse weather conditions, and some travel. This position is also administrative. Physical requirements include: sitting, walking, standing, bending, twisting, squatting, kneeling, reaching, repeated hand/arm/finger motion, climbing, driving, typing, manual and finger dexterity, lifting up to 75 pounds, pushing or pulling up to 90 pounds, carrying up to 75 pounds. The use of various hand and power tools is required on occasion. Requires working inside and outside, occasionally in adverse weather conditions, extreme cold or heat, for extended periods of time. Due to the nature of park work, there is a risk of injury, animal or insect bites, and exposure to infection, dust, allergens, chemicals and petroleum products. Ability to see at a distance and close-up, see colors and having good depth perception is essential. Ability to hear in quiet and noisy environments, as well as telling where a sound is coming from is essential. Ability to communicate through speech is essential. Shift work is required on weekends, holidays and during events held at the park or at another site. Emergency situations may arise requiring extended hours of work, or return to work after normal hours. Sitting at a desk or computer workstation is essential.
