#2223-30 (Continuous)
An examination will be given to establish an eligibility list for the position of Paraprofessional-Preschool in order to fill existing and future vacancies. These positions are part-time, 6.0 hours per day 206 paid days/year.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
A completed application for employment must be received in Human Resources by 4:30 p.m. on the closing date. Please note: If having issues with Internet Explorer, try Firefox. Faxed materials are not acceptable.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Experience working with children, preferably in an organized setting.
AND
• Possess an Associate's Degree or higher (submit copy of degree with application).
OR
• Completed 48 units of college work (submit transcripts with application).
OR
• Successful completion of the No Child Left Behind Exam given by La Mesa - Spring Valley School District (submit copy of certificate with application).
AND
Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency.
AND
State Bill 792 (SB 792) requires employees at child care facilities to be immunized against influenza, pertussis, and measles. Additionally, between August 1 and December 1 of each year, employees and volunteers must receive an influenza vaccine or submit an opt-out declaration.
AND
Six (6) units of college credits in child development classes (or must be completed within one year of hire date)
ESSA COMPLIANCE- The Paraprofessional-Preschool classification requires that all incumbents meet the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requirements. This can be accomplished by one of the following: a) 2 years of completed study at an institution of higher learning (48 units or more with transcripts submitted with application), b) an Associate's Degree or higher (copy of degree submitted with application), OR c) by passing the District ESSA exam.
If you are not ESSA compliant prior to the date of the written merit exam, you will be given an opportunity to take the ESSA exam along with the merit exam. Please note that the written merit exam will not be scored without successfully passing the ESSA exam.
Merit exam is for those who have submitted a classified application, meet minimum qualifications, and have satisfied the ESSA requirements above.

All testing will take place at La Mesa - Spring Valley School District's Education Service Center, 4750 Date Avenue, La Mesa, CA 91942 (Phone: 619-668-5700) unless notified otherwise. Test starts promptly at the scheduled time. Latecomers will not be admitted. Candidates will be required to present valid photo identification prior to sign-in.
Those who achieve a passing score on the written exam will be invited to an oral exam.

Examples of Duties
• Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
• Administers classroom assignments, tests, homework assignments, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of supporting teachers in the instructional process.
• Administers minor first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional for the purpose of meeting immediate health care needs.
• Assists students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments (e.g., read stories, listen to students read, providing writing assistance, reinforce English lessons, provide spelling practice, facilitate activities, computer learning programs) for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching academic goals and grade level standards.
• Attends meetings and in-service presentations for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
• Communicates with teachers and/or parents as may be required for the purpose of assisting in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP/IFSP objectives.
• Implements, under the supervision of assigned teacher, instructional programs and lesson plans for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.
• Maintains classroom equipment, work area, and manual and electronic files and records for the purpose of ensuring availability of items; providing written reference; providing a safe learning environment; and/or meeting mandated requirements.
• Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g., classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunchroom, bus loading/unloading) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
• Reports observations and incidents relating to specific students (e.g., accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, safety conditions) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate instructional and/or administrative personnel.
• Responds to emergency situations (e.g., injured student, fights) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
• Supports classroom teachers and other school personnel for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of curriculum and teaching methodologies. Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school and 6 units of college credits in child development classes (or must be completed within one year of hire date) and experience working with children, preferably in an organized setting. Completion of two years of higher education study OR possession of an Associate's or higher level degree, OR pass assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics OR reading, writing, and mathematics readiness. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: concepts of grammar and punctuation; stages of child development and learning styles; and age appropriate activities.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; working as part of a team; and working with constant interruptions.
