Friendswood Volunteer Fire Department
Location: Friendswood, Texas
Job Title: Full-Time Paramedic
Friendswood Volunteer Fire Department EMS Division is seeking qualified applicants to fill the position of Full-Time Paramedic.
Purpose:
To render Basic and Advanced Life support and emergency medical techniques to those in need of assistance; to operate and maintain assigned ambulance and station; to participate in continuing education and training relative to medical and industry advancements.
SCHEDULE:
  • 48-hour shifts with 96 hours off (48/96 schedule)
  • Holidays are worked per 48/96 schedule.
  • Additional shifts and overtime as required and scheduled.
Position Description:
  • Title: Paramedic
  • Reports to: EMS Chief (receives medical and operations supervision) and EMS Captain (receives general daily supervision)
  • Starting Wage: $20.00-$21.00/hour ($68,900-$72,345 annual with built-in overtime & Holiday Pay)
Duties:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  1. Render pre-hospital emergency care according to established medical protocols.
  2. Perform triage and a variety of emergency medical treatments at the Basic and Advanced Life support level. Provide continuing care and treatment while enroute to an emergency medical facility; monitor and report changes in patient condition.
  3. Under medical direction and following prescribed standing orders perform a variety of invasive and non-invasive therapies including but not limited to assessment and evaluation of the ill and injured, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation, administration of drugs, agents and solutions, intubation and pulmonary ventilation, drawing of blood samples for analysis, application of dressing and bandages, control of shock, and immobilization of fractures, and all other skills contained within the Department of Transportation manual of knowledge objectives for Paramedics.
  4. Drive the ambulance to emergency scenes, transport accident victims and medical patients to hospitals.
  5. Assist and coordinate with Friendswood Volunteer Fire Department (FVFD) and other emergency service agencies in rescue operations, motor vehicle accidents and other emergency situations.
  6. Perform a variety of emergency medical treatment services at the basic and advanced life support levels.
  7. Employ safe lifting and moving techniques. Maintain ambulance vehicle, equipment and station.
  8. Lead and participate in training classes for the public on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), standard first aid and emergency medical techniques. Participate in public health education and screening.
  9. Act as a preceptor for EMS students.
  10. Handle radio communications during emergency and non-emergency situations professionally.
  11. Keep records and logs on daily activities.
  12. Perform related station and EMS duties and projects as assigned.
  13. Attend call review meetings (overtime if off duty)
  14. Ride-Up as supervisor if cleared to do so.
Physical Requirements:
These physical requirements are representative of demands that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions on the job for indefinite periods of time.
  1. Mobility within an office and field environment
  2. Standing, walking and sitting.
  3. Stooping, squatting, crawling, and crouching.
  4. Running, climbing and twisting body.
  5. Reaching above shoulder level, seeing, feeling and hearing.
  6. Lifting, dragging and carrying up to one hundred and fifty (150) pounds, pushing and pulling.
  7. Using both hands for simple and firm grasping, fine finger manipulation for writing and typing on a personal computer or mobile computer.
Ability to:
  • Work a 48/96-hour shift – from 6:30 am to 6:30 am. (On call and extend shifts when necessary).
  • Learn the geography of the local area.
  • Think and act quickly in emergencies and judge situations and people
    accurately.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Prepare concise and comprehensive written reports, while remaining within commonly accepted standards for grammar.
  • Work safely under hazardous conditions.
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation.
  • Ability to properly operate Advanced Life Support equipment and light rescue tools.
  • Correctly administer therapeutic drugs and solutions.
  • Maintain vehicle and equipment.
  • Ability to operate emergency vehicles through city traffic.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, in person, by two-way radio, verbally and in writing.
  • Respond properly to directions from supervising personnel.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-employees and those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain sufficient personal health and physical fitness to perform all job duties.
  • Respond to duty in the course of any man-made or natural disasters under the direction of EMS Chief
Environmental/Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors.
  • Exposure to extreme cold, heat, and temperature swings.
  • Exposure to hazardous weather conditions.
  • Exposure to hazardous conditions such as: Mechanical/and electrical; fumes, odors; toxic waste; chemicals; explosives; heights, loud noises.
  • Exposure to Blood-Borne pathogens: Blood; infectious disease, other bodily fluids.
  • Working in trenches.
  • Stress may be encountered when working at a rescue scene, unsuccessful attempts to rescue victims, and managing very critical patients.
  • Employees will be required to respond to calls during the shift.
Knowledge or Skill Proficiencies:
  • Approved medical protocols, standing orders, policies and procedures.
  • Techniques of proper drug administration.
  • Emergency medical techniques.
  • Medical terminology and abbreviations.
  • Medical characteristics of various drugs and solutions.
  • Emergency driving techniques.
  • Vehicle and equipment maintenance.
  • Record keeping procedures and methods of documentation.
  • All applicable local, state and federal regulations.
  • Infectious disease universal precautions and decontamination
    of ambulance and equipment.
Requirements:
  • Possession of a Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) Paramedic (EMT-P) Certification or License (LP)
  • ITLS - Trauma Life Support certificate (ITLS)
  • AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certificate (ACLS)
  • AHA Pediatric Life Support Certification (PALS)
  • A valid Texas Drivers License.
  • American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers Certification
  • High School Diploma or GED supplemented by specialized college level.
  • A minimum of One (1) year or experience as paramedic in a 911 system
  • Possess or acquire within Six (6) months: NIMS 100, 200, 700 and 800
  • Each individual must qualify and be recertified prior to the end of the TDSHS certification period to remain employed.
Continuing Education:
  • Must maintain yearly CE hours within current TDSHS guidelines.
  • Must exercise professional initiative to stay current with new drugs and treatment procedure guidelines.
  • Must maintain the ability to carry out standing orders within the Medical Director's discretion.
NOTE: All positions at the Friendswood Volunteer Fire Department require documentation of employment eligibility in accordance with Federal regulations.
Drug screen, medical physical, background and driving history must be completed successfully before employment.
