The Position

The Port Townsend Paper Mill currently has an opening for aPaper Machine Beater Operator based out of our location in Port Townsend, Washington.

The Port Townsend Paper ("PTPC") mill is proud to have been in continuous operation for more than 90 years. We use a blend of virgin and recycled fibers (Kraft and OCC pulp) to produce Kraft pulp, paper, containerboard, medium and market pulp. Job Responsibilities

  • Operate the Dry End Pulper and Slusher equipment.
  • Use appropriate tools and equipment to clear broke from under machines.
  • Inspects and keeps clear felt guide paddles and ropes in basement.
  • Assist Paper Machine operators with various tasks, including loading raw materials, monitoring machine parameters, and conducting quality checks.
  • Transport raw materials to the Paper Machines and assist with the loading process.
  • Participate in routine cleaning and maintenance activities to keep the Paper Machines in good working condition.
  • Adhere strictly to safety protocols and guidelines, including lockout/tagout procedures and the use of PPE. Ensure all safety guards and devices are in place and functional before starting work.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and other team members to ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Report any problems, incidents, or equipment malfunctions promptly.
  • All other duties as assigned.

 

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Previous experience in a manufacturing or industrial setting is preferred but not required.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and the ability to learn new tasks quickly.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to perform tasks requiring moderate to heavy lifting and prolonged standing.
  • Must be 18 years of age and over.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to pass preemployment physical capacities and drug test.

 

Work Schedule and Environment

  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as required.
  • Position is exposed to a variety of temperatures, dust, odors, and noise.

 

Benefits

  • Position is represented by the United Steelworkers Union
  • Salary range: starting at $19.57/hour for the first 60 working days then $22.51/hour to $43.01/hour depending on specific job being performed.
  • Excellent benefits package including medical, dental, life, and short-term disability insurance.
  • 1 week vacation after 6 months of employment, followed by 2 weeks paid vacation January 1st (must work 1000 hours)
  • 9 paid holidays and 1 personal holiday per calendar year.
