Form of workUnion Tank Car Company is seeking off shift Painters at our full-service rail tank car repair shop in Muscatine, Iowa. Wages start at $25.00 per hour. Must be willing to work on 2nd or 3rd shift. The Company’s regulatory, engineering, and commercial expertise make UTLX the preferred source of railcars and services for many of its customers. Primary Job Functions
This is not an exhaustive list and employees in these classifications frequently may be required to perform additional duties. Not all classifications will be required to perform all job functions.
- Masks off components such as valves, trucks, couplers, or areas of the surface not to be sprayed.
- Selects coatings following work specifications and prepares equipment for spraying.
- Mixes coatings according to specifications and applies the coating to install or repair a section of a coating using airless spray equipment to the exterior of a tank car.
- Cleans and maintains spraying equipment.
- Applies decals as required to the tank or hopper car exterior.
- Inspects finished product for overall quality and follows established safety procedures.
- Maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner and reports potential hazards.
Knowledge and Skills Required
- Have a High School Diploma or GED or be willing to complete an on-site basic skills assessment and pass.
- Experience or knowledge in the use of painting/blasting tools, not limited to paint guns, sanding tools, material blasters, grinding tools, etc.
- Must be able to work effectively and efficiently both as a member of a team and independently.
- Able to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision.
- Ability to read, interpret, and follow documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, work orders, and assembly instructions.
- Safety and quality focused.
- Be available to work any shift,
- Be dependable and reliable to show up for scheduled work shifts including overtime, as allowed per the union contract. Must be able to pass a 60-day probation period with limited absenteeism, and safety and performance issues.
Environmental Conditions
- Will have to lift up to 50 pounds as needed.
- Will perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
- Will be working around chemicals and fumes common to paint and body repair.
- May work in confined spaces and at heights exceeding 4 ft. off the ground with proper PPE and fall protection.
- Close mental and visual attention required, coordinating manual dexterity with mental and visual attention for sustained periods of time.
