Description:

The Outreach Specialist will develop communication strategies and build networks with local and regional partners. The priority of the day-to-day work will be on reaching underserved populations including youth, residents in rural areas, residents with physical or mental disabilities, and communities with cultural or language barriers with information about public health's role and resources. The secondary priority will be to train and step in as a public information officer assistant, supporting communication efforts for the health district

Duties/Responsibilities:

Expected yearly output: 70% outreach, 30% PIO training/work.

  • Engage in and plan outreach activities (this may occasionally require work in the evening or on weekends).
  • Build partnerships with local agencies to better serve residents and connect communities with resources.
  • Work with underserved populations including youth, residents in rural areas, residents with physical or mental disabilities, and communities with cultural or language barriers.
  • Confidently engage in social media outreach using video, photos, and graphics.
  • Perform as the media relations backup support for the PIO. This may include issuing press releases, holding press events, performing interviews, providing interview support for SCPHD staff, issuing press alerts, etc. when the PIO is unavailable.
  • Provide marketing backup support for the PIO.
  • Engage in public outreach and response including answering difficult phone calls, providing outreach at community events, answering questions about SCPHD programs, responding to community emails, etc.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement projects.
  • Work with community health data to determine specific support needs for areas within the region.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Comfortable and skilled with popular social media platforms and trends within those platforms.
  • Experience providing in-person education to the community.
  • Experience networking and building community partnerships.
  • Computer literacy with an ability and willingness to learn new software or online programs.
  • Data literacy.
  • Bachelor’s degree in health education, communications, public relations, or a similar study, OR five or more years of work/lived experience in communications/health outreach.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The ability to fluently speak Spanish.
  • Knowledge of public health practices.
  • Experience with graphic design and photo/video editing software.
  • Experience working with local news media.
  • Experience working with data sets.
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. May be required to stand for prolonged periods of time, climb stairs, and perform strenuous activities.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
