Outdoor Trips Instructor

Salary: $1,300 for 5 days ($260/day)
Employment Period: April 8-April 12 (Monday and Tuesday 8:30 am-5:00 pm at The Urban School in SF; Wednesday-Friday in Point Reyes)
Location: The Urban School, San Francisco (Monday and Tuesday), Point Reyes (Wednesday-Friday)
The Urban School of San Francisco is seeking dedicated individuals for the role of Kitchen Leads/Support Staff for a high school camping trip. This five-day opportunity involves working with the entire 10th-grade class (approximately 100 students) during a 3-day, 2-night camping excursion to Coast Camp in Point Reyes.
Responsibilities:
Take charge of one of three kitchens, each serving approximately 35 people.
Assume the role of lead medical support for students and faculty.
Provide support to faculty members in their chosen activities for the students.
Engage in trail maintenance work with students and adults during one day of the trip.
Requirements:
- Exceptional organizational skills.
- Experience in cooking for large groups in outdoor settings.
- Proficient in managing groups of students.
- Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification is preferable (Wilderness First Aid - WFA is also accepted).
This position requires commitment for two preparation days before the trip, involving food shopping and gear loading, followed by active participation during the 3-day camping trip. While the school staff handles planning and decision-making, your commitment to ensuring a smooth and enjoyable camping experience for students is crucial.

Job Description
Job purpose
The course starts and ends at the Urban School of San Francisco. Instructors will assist the Outdoor Trips Coordinator with course preparation and food shopping.
Duties and responsibilities
Oversee meal preparation and effectively utilize the help of students and faculty,
Help the group to orient to the area and learn to camp comfortably,
Support activities when not helping with meal preparation,
Generally fill in where needed,
Complete trail maintenance work with the students/adults one day during the trip
Qualifications
Current WFR certification
Experience teaching students in grades 9-12 in a variety of outdoor settings
Experience working with students in a kitchen setting (backcountry or front country)
Knowledge of the course area a plus
Completion of all necessary paperwork and forms by (New Hire Paperwork, LiveScan, Form I-9, DMV pull notice)
Organization skills
Working conditions
The job requires the person to work outdoors in hot or cold weather. Mon-Tue are in San Francisco and Wed-Fri are in Point Reyes.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to bend, reach, stoop, stand and/or walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and/or move heavy objects over 25 lbs.
- Ability to work under stressful conditions.
- Ability to traverse rough terrain.
