We're looking for a talented individual to help support our Outdoor Recreation department and oversee various programs: camping, rock climbing, paddle sports, mountain biking, hiking, and backpacking for the spring-fall season of 2024. This position will assist the Outdoor Recreation Supervisor and Full Time Coordinator to coordinate and supervise Recreation Programs, providing high-quality recreation opportunities for the community in partnership with SOS Outreach.

Salary: $20.27 - $30.41/hour; DOE

Reports To: Works under the general guidance and direction of the Mountain Recreation Outdoor Recreation Supervisor and Outdoor Recreation Full-Time Coordinator.
Supervision Exercised: Directly supervise part-time and seasonal employees, volunteers, guides in training, program instructors, and campers.
Work Environment: Works indoors and outdoors. Hours will be flexible to successfully accomplish the duties of the position. Duties may be performed either indoors or outdoors, which may include working in extreme weather conditions. The flow of work and character of duties involve normal mental and visual attention much or all the time. Physical exertion includes frequent walking, bending, and the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted, pushing, pulling, and kneeling to deliver equipment and supplies. The nature of the position can be physically demanding, requiring constant safety awareness and attending to a wide variety of participant needs with periods of continuous demand.
General Statement of Duties: Assist the Outdoor Recreation Supervisor in coordinating and supervising Recreation Programs, and providing high-quality recreation opportunities for the community in partnership with SOS Outreach.
Examples of Duties:
  • Work on a team with the Outdoor Recreation Supervisor and Full-Time Coordinator to oversee administrative and hands-on tasks associated with running a full season of Outdoor Recreation Programming.
  • Assist the Outdoor Recreation Supervisor and Full Time Coordinator with planning, coordinating, supervising, and conducting Outdoor Recreation Programs such as backpacking, mountain biking, camping, rock climbing, paddle sports, nature art, environmental stewardship projects, BMX, skateboarding, and hiking.
  • Help plan overnight programs such as route, menu, gear, guide briefing, pre-trip communications with participants, creating guide trip folders, permit tracking, etc.
  • Provide field support to staff including being on call, bringing food and miscellaneous supplies, evacuating participants, making adjustments to planned locations due to weather, and filling in for field staff as necessary.
  • Support instructors and guides with program set-up, rosters, and equipment needs.
  • Assist the Outdoor Recreation Supervisor and Full-Time Coordinator in leading pre-season staff training(s).
  • Shadow program leads and guides in the field and conduct program evaluations to ensure high-quality programming for participants.
  • Inspect and maintain program spaces and gear room as needed to ensure a safe and positive experience for participants; inventory, fix, and order Outdoor Recreation gear as needed.
  • Provide good public relations for the District by notifying class participants and instructors of class cancellations, program changes, added classes, processing refunds, and receiving and replying to all correspondence.
  • Provide guidance to instructors handling difficult situations with participants.
  • Coordinate schedules with contractors and partner agencies to run successful Outdoor Recreation Programming.
  • Arrange times, locations, speakers, instructors, officials, and other participants as necessary for Recreation Programs.
  • Drive truck/trailer combo to transport necessary gear; drive 15-passenger van to transport participants.
  • Provide for the safety of participants and staff, including implementing risk management practices.
  • Support partnerships with other organizations not limited to: Recreation Departments, School Districts, Towns, Counties, Special Districts, Non-Profits, and Sports Associations.
  • Ensure logistical support for all programs.
  • Provide Emergency Support and Risk Management to programs in the field.
  • Provide exemplary customer service to internal and external guests.
  • Develop program information and input data for registration. Assist with specific marketing and promotion efforts for programs in coordination with the Marketing Manager.
  • Work collaboratively with the Facility Supervisors to coordinate the use of program area facilities in accordance with priorities and/or regulations.
  • Fill in as a field guide as needed.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of the Colorado National Monument (CNM) Program.

Other Duties & Functions:
  • Attend pre-season staff training.
  • Maintain and care for program facilities, equipment, and supplies.
  • Instruct various recreational classes as needed or directed by Mountain Recreation and in partnership with SOS Outreach.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Requirements
Required Knowledge & Skills:
Considerable knowledge of : theory, development, practices, implementation, and evaluation in assigned program area; age and activity-appropriate program planning; Recreation Program risk management; facilities and equipment required in assigned program area.
Skills and ability: to effectively communicate in both verbal and written form; exercise independent initiative, judgment, and decision-making; demonstrate strong organizational, leadership, planning, and problem-solving skills; effectively supervise and motivate staff; work well with a wide variety of people including children, youth, and adults; actively participate in activities provided by program area; establish and maintain positive, respectful, and cooperative relationships with all contacts; lift, restrain, and run after participants; lift equipment and supplies; work cooperatively with others and create a positive, construction relationship with staff and the general public; proficient in the use of office equipment including computers
Requirements
  1. Two years of college with an emphasis in a related field; AND
  2. Two years of progressive work experience in closely related recreation position; OR
  3. Any satisfactory combination of experience and training that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the above-described duties.
  4. Current CPR and Wilderness First Responder certification
  5. Must be 21 years of age and able to operate a van and trailer combination.
  6. Physically fit: Day hiking involves 2-4 miles and up to 2,000' elevation gains. Must be able to carry 30lbs. guide pack.
  7. Pass federal background check and Motor Vehicle check.
  8. Knowledge of Leave No Trace Practicess
  9. Prior experience working with youth and youth outdoor adventure programs.
  10. Rock climbing, hiking, wilderness travel, and team building experience (Preferably in the Rocky Mountain Region).
  11. Spanish language proficiency and cultural literacy (preferred).
