This role will be located at one of Discovery Land Company’s locations: Cape Ceiba Golf & Yacht Club, set outside of Ceiba, Puerto Rico.

Cape Ceiba is seeking a full-time, year-round Outdoor Pursuits Manager to join the Outdoor Pursuits Department.

The Outdoor Pursuits Manager will be responsible for providing exceptional experiences and memories for members, guests and sales prospects during their visits. Initial responsibilities will focus on early programming and leading activities for sales prospects on the project and the local surrounding areas. The Outdoor Pursuits Manager will supervise the programs offered to ensure safety of members, guests, and employees at all time, and ensure staff attendants are properly trained and/or certified in outdoor activities offered. In this role, you will be part of creating the Discovery Land Company experience for our members and fellow employees.

Duties & Responsibilities:

General Operations

  • Manage the Outdoor pursuits team and their responsibilities
  • Implement and maintain the policies and procedures for Outdoor Pursuits which reflects the highest standard of operation and member service
  • Develop a team and facilities which are fit for business purpose and to support the delivery of the members experience and property operations.
  • Instruct staff and third-party vendors to provide the utmost care for the safety and security of members, guests, and prospects when involved in water and sports related activities.
  • Hire Outdoor Pursuits staff members and conduct necessary training.
  • Maintain up to date inventory of department equipment as well as loss prevention efforts.
  • Manage the Kids Camp Program
  • Training and Development of Outdoor pursuits staff
  • Management and implementation of marine and on land Standard Operating procedures and manage member, visitor and team compliance.
  • Ensure the activities offered to the members are safe and follow SOP guidelines
  • Provide activity and recommendation reports on all the above as needed
  • Contribute to the delivery and development of guest experience standards. Look to ways to continuously enhance and improve.
  • Run and attend staff daily briefings
  • Be part of the duty management schedule.
  • Perform daily department administration tasks
  • Works with Contract Employees as need to ensure operational efficiency and Baker’s Bay standards for service are fulfilled
  • Ultimate financial responsibility for the Outdoor pursuits department budget

Activities Management

  • Maintain knowledge of activities and instruct activities including, but not limited, to Kitesurfing, Diving, E-foil, Wing foil, Sailing, Tennis, Pickleball, Volleyball, Football, Baseball, Lacrosse, Snorkeling, Paddle boarding, Tubing and Electric Watersports.
  • Maintain oversight of the Sport Activities following SOP guidelines
  • Ensure exceptional health and safety standards are met and documented
  • Regularly review and develop standards and member experience offered by the OP team / department
  • Develop new activities and offerings for the membership.
  • Implement fun and safe ways for the staff to get involved in activities
  • Ensure the boat fleet meets and exceeds local coding and safety standards

Staff Leadership and Management

  • Lead with and model the Discovery Land values and behaviors
  • Work with the HR team on staff wellbeing and optimum performance
  • Coordinate the development of direct reports, deliver on-the-job-training and coach individual team members to develop their skills
  • Maximize performance and personal development of the team
  • Schedule attendance and organize other relevant company training
  • Establish goals and objectives for all direct reports
  • Identify areas of responsibility and ensures team members receive regular feedback to support and motivate them to achieve their performance objectives.
  • Action progressive discipline procedures for areas of responsibility
  • Keep morale high within the teams
  • Budget for and arranging team outings and creative ways to show appreciation to the team
  • Take necessary steps to ensure a harmonious working relationship within the team is maintained
  • Deal with any issues that might threaten a conductive working atmosphere immediately.
  • Play a key role in the delivery of department inductions and company welcome for new employees
  • Perform progressive disciplinary action for supervised employees, as needed.
  • Develop, display and maintain the highest standard of cleanliness and organization for the Outdoor Pursuits operation.

Employee Relations:

  • Oversee & delegate duties to other staff and works alongside the staff
  • Covers duties for Supervisor on their days off
  • Playing with member children
  • Facilitating sporting and special events
  • Maintain adherence to and stay abreast to any changes of the Employee Handbook
  • Perform other duties throughout the Club as assigned
  • All other duties assigned by management

Member Relations:

  • Maintain enthusiasm for sports and recreation while encouraging participation with members and guests
  • Setting up and breaking down all equipment and areas used in activities/sports
  • Assist and running Outdoor Pursuits services as required
  • Greeting all members who enter OP areas.
  • Seating the members, moving chairs and umbrellas accordingly
  • Supplying members with towels
  • Keeping towels and suntan lotion stocked at stations
  • Helping members in and out of the water with water equipment
  • Taking food and drink orders and communicating with Food & Beverage appropriately
  • Insuring safety of members and children in and around the pools and beach
  • Making bonfires
  • Greeting and parking golf carts at Valet station
  • Assisting members and guests in all water sports and activities.

Finance:

  • Responsible for all department finances including but not limited to: payroll, member charges, point of sale management
  • Manage the department’s P&Ls – monitor and control expenditure within budget, prepare reports for spend as required
  • Work within an agreed sign off Matrix to control expenses / costs and facilitate purchasing alongside the Procurement team.
  • Control costs and initiate cost saving ideas whilst maintaining the best of the member experience and safety standards.
  • Work with Procurement team to liaise with suppliers to create key relationships and establish competitive rates and prices for equipment, parts and services.
  • Sign off on orders ensuring they are prepared correctly within

Health and Safety

  • Always work within the company statutory Health and Safety guidelines set by management team.
  • Ensure you and the OP team always wear required PPE protection.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment.
  • Observe and abide to local pollution and COSHH regulations regarding disposal of waste materials, chemical and hazardous substances.


Skills & Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a 4-5 star resort setting or in the luxury related field
  • Full knowledge of all Outdoor Pursuits services/activities
  • Valid Powerboat license
  • First aid/CPR qualified
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience of staff supervision is required
  • Must have knowledge of outdoor recreation and marine environment
  • Must be capable and comfortable swimming in the ocean
  • Previous experience teaching/coaching outdoor watersports sports
  • Previous experience in the guest service industry
  • Good judgement, decision making, and critical thinking
  • Positive attitude, professional demeanor, and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to deliver service to members, guests, and team members.
  • Must be able to work flexible work hours/schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Long hours may be required due to business demands.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to stay calm and focused during the busiest of times.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English; additional languages preferred.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position including, but not limited to, working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, standing, walking, and moving for periods of greater than eight (8) hours, and lifting and carrying items sometimes greater than fifty (50) pounds.
