Shift: 6:30am - 7:00pm, 3 weekdays per week. No call required.

Summary:
The Operating Room will have a designated Charge Nurse assigned to each shift during normal operational hours. During non-operational hours the circulator on call assumes the Charge Nurse duties in a modified role.To delegate responsibility for patient care and operating room daily operation in the absence of the Unit Coordinator/Director.

A CHARGE NURSE is a registered nurse designated by the Unit Coordinator/Director and is responsible for supervision and delegation of patient care and nursing activities related to the Operating Room.2. A CHARGE NURSE will have two years of nursing experience working in NOMC operating room or past experience as a CHARGE NURSE in a comparable Operating Room of size, volume and services.3. A CHARGE NURSE will be flexible, approachable and maintain good rapport with the nursing personnel and medical staff. He/she will perform all duties in a pleasant professional manner.4. Responsibilities:
MANAGEMENT OF PERSONNEL:1. Assists in interviewing and evaluating staff for the Operating Room.2. Supervises Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Surgical Technicians, Nursing Assistants and ancillary staff in the performance of their daily duties in the surgical suite and work areas, assisted by the Operating Room Coordinator.a. Ensures that hospital and departmental policies and procedures are carried out.b. Ensures that aseptic technique is practiced.c. Ensures job duties specific to inventory/stocking rotation are complete.3. Collaborates with Perioperative Clinical Educator in placement of orientees to specific cases required to complete orientation.4. Provides feedback to the Operating Room Coordinator for completion of probationary and annual staff performance appraisals.5. Maintains a daily staffing pattern appropriate for scheduled cases. Utilizes the pecking order rotation frequently and consistently when dismissing staff for the day. 6. Monitors attendance and tardiness of staff members and reports to the Payroll Clerk and/or Unit Coordinator.7. Reports problems or educational needs related to individual staff members to the Operating Room Coordinator.8. Promotes conflict resolution among surgical team members, i.e., surgeon, anesthesia, operating room staff.MANAGEMENT OF THE OPERATING ROOM SCHEDULE:1. Follows the Operating Room guidelines outlined in the Rules and Regulations of the Operative Suite (OR-0010-0020) and Staffing Guidelines After 3p (OR-0020-0190) policies with regards to executing the Operating Room schedule.2. Maintains AORN and Operating Room specific standards necessary to provide a safe, clean and orderly environment.3. Communicates positively and effectively to surgeons, Operating Room staff and other nursing and ancillary departments regarding the status of surgical patients.4. Anticipates surgical start time and sends for the patient in a timely manner to ensure anesthesia consenting and pre-op verification in the holding area.5. Communicates problems interfering with the execution of the Operating Room schedule to the Operating Room Coordinator/Director. 6. Prepares the next day’s Operating Room schedule for Coordinator’s approval.MANAGEMENT OF PATIENT CARE:1. Assesses and evaluates patient needs pre-operatively, intra-operatively and post-operatively. 2. Documents assessment and intervention in the Operating Room nurses record.3. Communicates to the family/significant other as needed.4. Participates in documentation audits to assure medical record completeness by the Operating Room staff.5. Communicates educational needs related to patient care to the Operating Room Coordinator.OTHER DUTIES:1. Compiles quality assurance information on a continuing basis. Submits grids monthly and summarizes quarterly.2. Conducts ongoing quality assurance studies to enhance peri-operative patient care.3. Serves on DIG teams and CQI teams as requested by Operating Room Coordinator/Director.4. Assists Perioperative Clinical Educator as needed to precept/orient new staff members.5. Contributes innovative ideas to facilitate and improve patient care, unit operations and contain cost.6. Performs other managerial duties as assigned.7. Communicates budgetary and staffing needs to Operating Room Coordinator/Director.
