Join the Optical Payload Center of Excellence (OPCoE) as an Opto-Mechanical Engineering Manager developing high technology readiness level (TRL) products for missiles and space hardware. This position will lead a group within the Structures, Thermal, and Mechanisms department to develop a product portfolio consisting of optical bench assemblies, dewars, optical mounts, thermal components, isolation systems, mechanisms (i.e., fast steering mirrors and filter wheels), beam modification, and other optical payload structures (i.e., telescope support). This is a unique opportunity to be a direct people manager while maintaining responsibility for a technical portfolio! Responsibilities split roughly 25-30% management, 70-75% program technical work.
As a Lockheed Martin leader, you will manage recruitment, development, assignment, and evaluation of your local and virtual team. You will lead your team to work with the architects and Fellows within OPCoE to develop product maturation plans in accordance with strategic roadmaps and need dates. Your group will keep abreast of SOA (State of the Art) as well as SOP (State of Practice) to provide subject matter expertise (SME) across all program lifecycles. This group will be consulted on make/buy decisions for their products and would be the execution team if a "make" decision was determined by the program. You will significantly impact the enterprise through establishment of a dedicated team working to drive common, high TRL products across programs.
In this leadership role, you will direct a group of 12-18 engineers to:
• Partner with Lines of Business (LOB) and OPCOE Payload Systems Engineering teams to develop architectures in a consistent manner to allow use of common products
• Develop transition plans for low TRL products from the science and technology community
• Propose and execute IRAD projects with a goal of standardization and maturation
• Enhance relationships with strategic suppliers and other LM Business Areas (BAs) to compliment the in-house OPCoE team
• Perform as part of the Integrated Product Team (IPT)
• Work closely with Payload IPT leads and LOB leadership to understand mission drivers
• Implement and lead technical knowledge management to develop and maintain core proficiencies, key technical skills, knowledge continuity and facilitate career advancement opportunities to employees
• Lead trade studies, analyses, design maturation, and drawing delivery for optical benches, optical element layouts, optical fixtures, and other passive optical elements
• Interface with teams that perform structural (both static and vibrational), thermal and optical performance analyses, working with a cross-functional team of engineers to optimize payload performance
• Be a leading member of our team that designs and develops electro-optical instruments and payloads for civilian and military aerospace applications
• Manage staffing requirements, sustain engineering capabilities and preserve critical skills
Basic Qualifications
• 14+ years of demonstrated technical expertise with a related Bachelor's degree or 12+ years with a Master's degree
• Experience working across space and ground applications
• Experience in mechanical design AND/OR structural or thermal analysis using a variety of materials (metallic, composite, glass, or other non-metallic)
• Experience in a range of standard design tools applied to mechanical design and/or analysis such as CREO, NX, MATLAB, Solid Works, Nastran, and/or other relevant assets
• Mechanical or Opto-mechanical experience in one or more of the following areas: structural/thermal analysis, opto-mechanical design, mechanisms, high-energy beam control, or other closely related skills
• Experience leading teams either formally (as a manager) or informally (as a lead)
• Active Secret clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Clearance
• Willingness to travel to between LM sites and suppliers/vendors monthly.
Desired skills
• 4+ years demonstrated hands-on expertise in space OR complex hardware systems
• Excellent communications skills both verbal and written with the proven ability to communicate
• Team leadership/management experience of teams greater than 15 people in charge of a significant mechanical component or assembly
• Demonstrated ability to drive closure and resolve complex technical issues/challenges
• Opto-Mechanical background with Optical payload experience
• Design for assembly/manufacturing mindset
• Experience with precision alignment of optical systems and use of alignment telescopes, laser trackers, etc.
• Experience with specification development, vendor interface, parts selection, and/or configuration control
• Experience with mechanical and optical ground support equipment, vacuum chamber, directed energy and/or cryogenic design or analysis
• Optical Mechanisms & mechanism control knowledge
• Program/Project Planning experience, working familiarity with MS-Project or related planning tools
• Top Secret clearance or higher

Ability to work remotely
Part-time Remote Telework: The employee selected for this position will work part of their work schedule remotely and part of their work schedule at a designated Lockheed Martin facility. The specific weekly schedule will be discussed during the hiring process.
Work Schedule Information
Lockheed Martin supports a variety of alternate work schedules that provide additional flexibility to our employees. Schedules range from standard 40 hours over a five day work week while others may be condensed. These condensed schedules provide employees with additional time away from the office and are in addition to our Paid Time off benefits.
Colorado Pay Statement
Pay Rate:
The annual base salary range for this position in California and New York (excluding most major metropolitan areas), Colorado, or Washington is $123,500 - $236,800. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. Lockheed Martin considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/ training, key skills as well as market and business considerations when extending an offer.
Benefits offered: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, 401(k) match, Flexible Spending Accounts, EAP, Education Assistance, Parental Leave, Paid time off, and Holidays.
(Washington state applicants only) Non-represented full time employees: accrue 10 hours per month of Paid Time Off (PTO); receive 40 hours of Granted PTO annually for incidental absences; receive at least 90 hours for holidays. Represented full time employees accrue 6.67 hours of PTO per month; accrue up to 52 hours of sick leave annually; receive at least 96 hours for holidays. PTO is prorated based on hours worked and start date during the calendar year.
This position is incentive plan eligible.

Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only.
