Job description

Plains End is a crucial energy facility featuring two integral units. Plains End I, with a capacity of 113 MW, commenced operations in May 2002 as a natural gas-fired reciprocating engine peaking facility, while Plains End II, boasting a 115 MW capacity, joined the energy landscape in May 2008 with a similar setup. These units, with a combined capacity of 228 MW, underscore Plains End's dedication to delivering dependable and sustainable energy solutions.
General Summary
The O&M Technician (OMT) assists in the safe and efficient operation of the power plant and the supporting equipment and systems. The OMT carries out routine water chemistry analysis, inspects and monitors operating components and reports plant status. With direction, the OMT will perform all the routine maintenance and repairs on plant facilities and equipment and tasks in accordance with the plant Maintenance Program and associated maintenance and repair procedures.
Primary Functions

  • Assist in start-up, shutdown and normal operations of power plant systems
  • Operate major auxiliary apparatus such as: air compressors, circulating water systems, boiler water treatment systems, waste water systems, generator cooling system, boiler feedwater and condensate system, and locally controlled electrical and mechanical equipment
  • Perform operating tests and inspections and make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment assigned to achieve proper operating conditions
  • Execute orders from the Control Room Operator at isolated panels for clearing equipment or making it ready for service in accordance with operating instructions and procedures; clear, tag, test and safety tape these operations
  • Perform routine water chemistry analysis and operate Continuous Emissions Monitoring equipment
  • Maintain logs as assigned
  • Report any abnormal or irregular conditions that develop during the progress of the work and take corrective measures within the scope of operating instructions
  • Assist maintenance personnel during maintenance periods
  • Have a general understanding of NERC policies and procedures; ensure any abnormalities related to NERC are reported
  • Complete other tasks as required

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Working with hazardous materials is required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
Fitness for Duty
All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.
Work Schedule
The initial work schedule comprises 10-hour workdays, four days per week. Once qualified, this position transitions to a 12-hour shift, working seven days on followed by seven days off. Position may require extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.
Compensation
Initial compensation will range from $40 to $45 per hour, and will include an annual bonus up to 15%.
Job Qualifications
  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school
  • Experience in a power plant environment desired, preferably as a Power Plant Technician or equivalent position
  • Experience in water chemistry control, analysis of water conditions, water treatment facility operations and chemical handling requirements
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of reciprocating engine operations, closed system steam generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management and inspection/recording of plant parameters is desired
  • Strong aptitude in math, mechanical/electrical ability desired
  • Experience with piping and instrument schematics and process controls desirable
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Valid driver's license required
