Job SummaryUnion – Local 399 (International Union of Operating Engineers)
Under general direction, the Operating Engineer II supervises the maintaining and monitoring of
building and power plant mechanical and operating systems. These systems include heating,
ventilation, air conditioning, water pumping, refrigeration, life safety, security, building automation, and
energy conservation to supply heat, light, and electrical power for hospitals, residential institutions, and
other County facilities. Supervises the positions of Operating Engineer I, Mechanical Assistant,
Fireman, and Fireman Helper. Performs other related job duties as required.
Typical Duties
- Completes daily, emergency, and preventative maintenance work orders.
- Collaborates with other trades on construction and remodeling projects.
- Monitors work by referring the daily dispatch log for all shifts.
- Verifies dialysis osmosis system is operating properly as protocol requires.
- Supervises the maintaining and monitoring of building and power plant mechanical and operating
- Provides work shift schedules to Operating Engineer l's, Mechanical Assistants, Firemen, and
performed.
- Performs rounds of the facility to see that required mechanical maintenance is performed by the
- Supervises the periodic overhaul, inspection, and testing of all boilers, absorbers, chillers,
- Monitors and implements Cook County energy conservation programs for assigned facility by
- Reports all inspections and makes recommendations for repairs and replacements of equipment.
- Maintains an inventory of spare parts, supplies and equipment that is necessary to ensure the
- Responds, coordinates, and assists in life safety and emergency situations (i.e. fire, bomb,

Reports to the Operating Engineer III and the Operating Engineer II
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
- Currently employed with Cook County as an Operating Engineer I, required.
- One (1) or more years of full-time paid work experience as an Operating Engineer I with Cook
- Five (5) years full-time paid work experience as a Journeyman Operating Engineer I is
- Current and valid Stationary Engineer's License issued by the City of Chicago is required.
- Current Driver’s license is required.
- Possession of a CFC (Clorofluoro Carbon) card is required
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
- Thorough and extensive knowledge of commercial and industrial heating, ventilation, air
- Knowledge of commercial and industrial electrical, plumbing, and steam fitting systems
- Knowledge of current industry standards and regulations
- Extensive skill in locating and identifying equipment problems, making emergency repairs and
- Strong verbal communication skills
- Ability to supervise Operating Engineers, Mechanical Assistants, Firemen, Firemen Helpers and
- Ability to read mechanical drawings and blue prints
- Ability to perform various types of physical exertion, including but not limited to lifting, pulling,
- Demonstrate analytical and organizational, problem-solving, critical thinking, and conflict
Physical and Environmental Demands
This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide policy and departmental procedures.
