Job Description
The S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University invites applications for a fulltime faculty position focused on production in the Television Radio & Film (TRF) Department, to start in August, 2024. The successful candidate will teach a variety of production classes. We are looking for a creative, engaging and inventive colleague who can advance the department's reputation as source for stand-out production talent in the entertainment industry.
Qualifications
  • Applicants must have significant professional experience in national and/or international entertainment media markets.
  • A master's degree is preferred; a bachelor's degree is required.
  • The rank of this position will be determined in light of the candidate's experience: from tenure track assistant professor to professor of practice to assistant teaching professor.
  • The department seeks applicants with either a strong teaching record or a clear potential to be an excellent teacher. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a "hands on" comfort with technology and ability to get into the "trenches" with students.

Job Specific Qualifications
  • The TRF Department prides itself on providing students a broad lens on storytelling practices and technologies to maximize outcomes present and future professional outcomes.
  • Candidates must have national or international professional experience ideally working on large sets. They should have a keen understanding of how each crew member contributes to the interdependent production process of a Hollywood-level film and/or television production process.
  • Regardless of candidate specialty (from directing, to producing to production design, to cinematography and lighting)the candidate should demonstrate an ability to connect technology to the enhancement of story experiences for consumers of media.
  • Being versed in current technological trends, a problem solver, and a good team player are essential, as one of the key values and strengths of the school lies in collaboration and interdisciplinary praxis for students and faculty alike.

Responsibilities
  • Depending on rank, this faculty member will teach up to three classes per semester in our two-semester academic year.
  • Course responsibilities will be across the spectrum, from introductory to advanced-level, based on the professor's areas of expertise.

Creative activity can include, as examples, industry trade or consumer media/news articles, and media production, development, or multimedia storytelling (photo/video, film, sound, web design, apps, scriptwriting).
    • Professional Track (Professor of Practice) - This rank puts the faculty in the position of connecting the Department and School to the profession. People with significant professional experience whose principal 817 contribution is teaching. Professors of practice have a specific obligation to continue their involvement in the professional world and to share their professional expertise in the classroom and with the School.
    • Teaching Track (Assistant Teaching Professor) - This rank puts the faculty in the position of teaching the profession to students as the primary responsibility. Teaching professors are expected to lead through innovative and compelling teaching practices.

About the Television, Radio & Film Department
Established in 1934, and consistently ranked on The Hollywood Reporter's Top 25 American Film Schools list, the Television, Radio & Film program is regarded as one of the best of its kind in the nation. The department's 18 full time faculty members, complemented by a specialized adjunct force, prepare future leaders in the television-radio-film and interactive media industries by introducing students to practices and systems of production, distribution and exhibition and their economic, political and social impact on the world.
The Television, Radio & Film major is the largest and most versatile in the Newhouse School, with 500 undergraduates and 40 Master's students. The major consists of a mix of core requirements and an extensive array of elective coursework, empowering students to customize their programs of study. Majors also study abroad-in over 100 programs in 60 countries-and participate in semester-long industry immersions in our New York and Los Angeles professional study centers. Students in the program earn national recognition with their creative work accepted to film festivals and the student Emmys and Telly awards.
Alumni pursue a wide variety of careers that include work as major market (mainly New York and Los Angeles) producers, directors, writers, designers, editors, executives, media educators, agents and attorneys.
