Speech Pathologist:
Description:
- Speech pathologists, also known as speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs), are healthcare professionals who assess, diagnose, and treat communication and swallowing disorders in individuals of all ages.
- They work with patients who may have speech sound disorders, language disorders, fluency disorders (stuttering), voice disorders, cognitive-communication disorders, and swallowing disorders.
- Speech pathologists develop and implement individualized treatment plans, which may involve exercises, therapy techniques, and the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices.
- They work in a variety of settings, including schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and private practices, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals and educators to support their clients' needs.
- Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program.
- State licensure or certification as a speech-Language Pathologist.
- Completion of a supervised clinical fellowship.
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the speech and hearing mechanisms.
- Understanding of communication disorders and their causes.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with patients and their families.
- Continuing education and professional development to stay current in the field.
- Assessment and Diagnosis: Conducting comprehensive evaluations to assess communication and swallowing disorders.
- Treatment Planning: Developing individualized treatment plans based on assessment findings.
- Therapy Techniques: Implementing evidence-based interventions to improve speech, language, and communication.
- Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC): Familiarity with AAC devices and strategies for individuals with severe communication impairments.
- Swallowing Assessment: Evaluating and managing swallowing disorders, known as dysphagia.
- Patient-Centered Care: Adapting therapy approaches to the unique needs and goals of each patient.
- Counseling and Education: Providing support and education to patients and their families.
- Collaboration: Working closely with other healthcare professionals, teachers, and caregivers.
- Data Collection and Reporting: Keeping detailed records of patient progress and communicating outcomes to relevant parties.
- Empathy and Patience: Demonstrating understanding and patience when working with patients facing communication challenges.

- Responsibilities will include
- Will provide general SLP services for approx. 70 students
- Will need to provide supervision to 1 or more SLPA's
