Job description

The Tianjin Juilliard School is seeking an experienced English for Academic Purposes (EAP) teacher for its summer online English and academic skills development course (pre-sessional), IEFP23. This course is oriented to new Masters of Music students whose first language is not English who have a  minimum English language proficiency of IELTS 6.0/TOEFL 80.

The Tianjin Juilliard School (TJS) is the first branch of an innovative initiative within this global objective. Approved by the Ministry of Education in China, TJS welcomed its first class of pre-college students in the 2019 academic year, and its first graduate class in Fall 2020. The Master of Music degree is a New York Juilliard degree. By equipping its musicians with core educational values and cultivating experiences, TJS, along with its dedicated world-class faculty, intends to take on the challenge of guiding aspiring artists on the path to achieving their full potential not only as musicians, but also as global ambassadors. Through a combination of highly selective graduate and pre-college programs, community-based open enrollment courses and inspiring performances in a state-of-the-art facility, TJS is to become an educational and cultural landmark in the Asia-Pacific region.

Responsibilities

Teaching

  • Deliver via an online video conferencing platform high-quality teaching on an online English for academic purposes (EAP) development course to pre-Master students, following a clearly defined curriculum and using provided materials
  • Manage the synchronous online whole-class teaching environment effectively to allow each student to experience an academically fulfilling environment
  • Deliver weekly synchronous online one-to-one "coaching" (tutorials) to ensure students are informed of their progress or the lack of thereof through the provision of timely, actionable feedback and advice
  • Be available for student support via email and via an online video conferencing platform (i.e., office hours)
  • Provide timely and relevant feedback and/or gradings (as necessary) on student asynchronous offline work done submitted via email or on the Learning Management System (LMS) e.g., Canvas
  • Encourage autonomous learning and prepare students for graduate study using English as the primary language
  • Use provided materials effectively and adapt to suit students' needs and abilities; occasionally find or create materials for teaching and/or to provide supplemental practice for students
  • Work as a team member, sharing any newly developed materials on the LMS and ensuring that changes made to the curriculum are communicated to the team
  • Deliver engaging and student-centered lessons with the aim of achieving course and learning objectives
  • Ensure all aspects of course delivery, assessment and administration meet the required standards and deadlines as outlined in the teaching induction
  • Promote excellence in learning and teaching, contribute ideas, share expertise, materials and good practice

Academic Administration

  • Actively participate in team meetings, standardization sessions, and any other meetings which may be required
  • Keep up-to-date attendance records
  • Complete individual student reports providing relevant feedback and gradings during and at the end of the course, as required by the Director of English Language Studies
  • Ensure that any material in relation to the assessments is collated and distributed in a timely and secure manner, as necessary

Other

  • Attend teaching induction (online)
  • Attend teachers' meetings (online) by providing detailed feedback on student progress
  • Undertake any other reasonable teaching or administrative duties appropriate to the role
  • Communicate with the team in a professional, collaborative, collegiate manner to ensure the effective delivery of the course
  • Within 30 days after completion of the course, provide feedback on working with the team, curriculum and materials, and the overall teaching experience as part of continuous quality improvement processes; upon request, receive performance feedback

Period of contract

This is a contract online teaching position for summer 2023 only. The teaching period is June 19 to August 18, 2023, exclusive ofFriday June 23 which is Dragon Boat Festival. There will be no teaching on June 23.

You will teach 22.5 contact hours per week (Monday to Friday, 4.5 hours / day.)  In addition, you will be expected to hold 8 online office hours and attend occasional online teacher meetings.

A mandatory online teaching induction will be conducted on Friday June 16.

Qualifications and experience

Applications are invited from suitably qualified English language teaching professionals who can offer experience and expertise, as below:

Essential

  • Ability to communicate accurately and fluently at a very high level of spoken and written English
  • A Master's degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics or other relevant area
  • A recognized English teaching certificate e.g., Cambridge CELTA or Trinity CerTESOL
  • Experience of teaching and assessing EAP (this excludes experience only with IELTS or TOEFL preparation)
  • Experience of planning and delivering successful English language and skills lessons online
  • Experience of assessing students' English language proficiency and competence
  • Awareness of, and commitment to, inclusive practices in the classroom
  • Familiarity with teaching EAP to Chinese university students
  • Experience teaching English online using online video conferencing platforms e.g., Microsoft Teams
  • Ability to work flexibly and as part of a team
  • Ability to manage time and workload effectively in an intensive environment

Preferred

  • Experience of teaching on a Chinese university EAP program, especially on pre-sessional courses
  • Familiarity with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
  • Ability to teach EAP students with varying English levels, of different nationalities and backgrounds
  • Ability to plan and deliver own teaching and tutorials in line with curriculum and student learning needs, with guidance if needed
