Job Title: Pharmacy Technician/Oncology

Reports To: Pharmacy Oncology Supervisor
Job Summary: Pharmacy Technicians/Oncology assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing chemotherapy/medications, maintaining drug inventory, and maintaining patient records in the Cayuga Cancer Center pharmacy. Pharmacy technicians/oncology work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. They do not perform duties that can legally be performed only by a registered pharmacist.
Job Responsibilities include:
- Procures and distributes medications per physician request, pharmacist request, or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures and protocols.
- Replenishes medications in automated dispensing units and emergency drug containers.
Performs evaluation of upcoming treatments and orders medications from supplies to maintain predominantly "just-in-time" inventory
- Fills/compounds medication labels and packages medications in a timely fashion for final check by a pharmacist
- Follows guidelines to ensure proper compliance with regulatory guidelines designed to ensure safe and accurate preparation of sterile pharmaceutical compounds e.g., USP<797> and <800>.
Working knowledge of equipment including vertical and horizontal laminar flow hoods and all disposable supplies needed to compound sterile products
- Carries out the calculations required for the usual dosage determinations and solutions
- Restocks medication and IV room areas accurately within specific time periods.
- Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing medications and supplies in appropriate locations including hazardous drugs.
- Rotates and manages stock before expiration date.
- Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately; files documentation is appropriate locations.
- Identifies and/or involved with opportunities for improvement or key Departmental initiatives (i.e. expense reduction, innovative ideas, projects, task or project lead).
- Maintains a clean and orderly sterile compounding environment, including cleaning tasks as set out by policy/USP regulation.
- Flexibility to float between Oncology pharmacies.
- Is flexible in assuming other appropriate responsibilities not noted above.
Requirements:
Education - High School diploma/equivalent.
Experience - 1-3 years Pharmacy Technician experience required. Chemotherapy preparation experience preferred.
Licensure - National certification (NHA/PTCB) or eligible.
Physical Requirements - Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., use of computer keyboard); may require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs.), including boxes, equipment, unit-dose cassettes, and IV solutions and stooping and kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace items on lower shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers); sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours) is often necessary; must be able physically to operate the equipment used for the job.
