Overview
Min Rate = $26.05 / Max Rate = $37.77 *Placement is in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Units Agreement.
The Oncology Data Specialist works 100% remote. They perform a variety of functions related to the collection, abstraction, and analysis of Oncology Data to develop and maintain a comprehensive cancer database in accordance with the New York State Cancer Registry, American College of Surgeons: Commission on Cancer and Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital regulations. Assists in other activities of the cancer program in order to maintain hospital accreditation by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.

Responsibilities
  1. At all times, complies with HIPPA guidelines and safeguards patient confidentiality.
  2. CASEFINDING: Navigates and reviews the electronic medical record (EPIC) and other relevant reports in order to identify reportable malignant and non-malignant conditions that are diagnosed and/or treated at CVPH as outlined in the New York State Cancer Registry Manual and Commission on Cancer (CoC) guidelines.
  3. Enters appropriate cases identified during the case finding process into the CVPH Cancer Registry's electronic database (METRIQ) with at least the minimum required data-set as outlined in the CVPH Casefinding P&P.
  4. ABSTRACTING: Abstracts all applicable cases as required by NYS & CoC. This requires accurate coding of demographics, primary site, histology, grade, prognostic indicators, stage, treatment and all other required data fields as specified by the NYS Cancer Registry, National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Program (NCI-SEER), American College of Surgeons, Commision on Cancer (CoC), American Joint Commission on Cancer (AJCC) and CVPH.
  5. Communicates effectively with administrators, physicians, support staff and other agencies to obtain or report information.
  6. Reviews physician documentation during analysis and queries physicians for clarification or completion.
  7. Performs annual quality assurance of abstracts as outlined in Commission on Cancer standard 6.1.
  8. Maintains annual follow-up for all applicable cases per requirements of Commission on Cancer (CoC) standard 6.5.
  9. Reports all applicable cases by specified deadlines to the NYS Cancer Registry as required by NYS Public Health Law 2401
  10. Reports all applicable cases to Commission on Cancer's National Cancer Database (Rapid Quality Reporting System) as required by CoC standards 6.2,6.3, and 6.4.
  11. Assists in data collection for Commission on Cancer special studies as required by CoC standard 9.2.
  12. Assists with the coordination of weekly Multidisciplinary Cancer Case Conference (MCCC) via Microsoft TEAMS. Attends meetings, prepares and distributes agenda and tracks the required CoC presentation elements.
  13. Assists with the coordination of five annual Cancer Care Committee meetings and monthly CoC sub-committee meetings. Schedules and prepares for meetings including distribution of agendas, power-point and minutes.
  14. Serves in various member roles on Cancer Care Committee as needed (i.e. Certified Tumor Register, Cancer Registry Quality Control Coordinator, Multidisciplinary Cancer Conference Coordinator, etc.)
  15. Maintains and updates all registry related policies and procedures.
  16. Maintains CTR credential and other educational requirements as outlined in CoC standard 4.3: Cancer Registry Staff Credentials and CVPH policies and procedures.
  17. Assists as needed in the design of data capture and development of systems to measure clinical outcomes.
  18. Assists as needed in quality improvement initiatives or other projects to meet CoC accreditation standards with the intent to improve cancer care and patient outcomes.
  19. Assists in Commission on Cancer accreditation site reviews including completion of electronic pre-review questionnaire (PRQ). Maintains current facility contact(s) information on the CoC's website.
  20. Assists Cancer Liaison Physician (CLP) with data analysis as needed for reports to Cancer Care Committee.
  21. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  1. Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) required
  2. 3+ Years abstracting experience preferred.
  3. Proficiency in data entry and using various computer software programs including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  4. Ability to type 35 Net/Adjusted WPM required.
  5. Excellent communication skills to collaborate with physicians and other health care professionals.

As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
