This position is to fill an on-call vacancy for the Adult Day Club.
Maintains front counter operations at Community Center; leads and oversees a variety of recreation and activity programs at designated recreation/senior services/Adult Day Club facility or on trips; or may serve as a pre-school teacher for children 2 years, 9 months to 6 years.
While the incumbent will primarily perform the duties of the Recreation Leader Sr. within the Adult Day Club Program, all the Essential Functions related to the Recreation Leader Sr. position are required to be performed as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Welcomes visitors and answers incoming telephone calls; provides information regarding activity schedules and registration requirements; processes customer registrations and inputs information into department computer system; processes customers for facility passes and photo ID's; receives funds and issues receipts; administers concession sales.
  • Leads, coordinates and supervises activities and programs; assists in development of promotional brochures / flyers; provides lead direction, training and work review to assigned staff and volunteers; organizes and assigns work, sets priorities, and follows-up to ensure coordination and completion of assigned work; ensures that proper safety precautions are observed; instructs others in proper work procedures.
  • Responsible for financial transactions; deposits funds; audits transactions; ensures security of cash and financial receipts.
  • Performs general building maintenance and custodial upkeep ensuring cleanliness of building, including restrooms; cleans up spills and unsanitary conditions when they occur; sets up and takes down meeting rooms, including the folding and un-folding of tables; inspects and repairs equipment as necessary; operates audiovisual equipment as needed.
  • Performs inspections of facility to ensure participant and customer safety and maintains a clean and organized recreational area; monitors all building participants during facility hours of operation to ensure orderly conduct.
  • Responsible for the development, implementation, and conduct of recreation programs and activities, including direct supervision and guidance of youth, senior and Adult Daycare participants; prepares lesson plans and leads games and craft activities; works as primary contact at camps, during off-site trips, and as support service provider at Adult Daycare.
  • May create and implement plans for special needs children; supervises their programs and ensures positive participation and behavior.
  • Maintains records of programs and activities including, but not limited to, rosters, daily roll sheets/attendance records, time cards, and emergency contacts; ensures up-to-date and accurate contact list for parents and/or legal guardians and ensures that participants are picked up in accordance with authorizations on file.
  • Periodically drives children and other staff in a county vehicle for off-site activities; monitors trip petty cash and activities of youth during recreational trips or tours; disciplines youth participants according to established policies and procedures, as necessary.
  • Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.

ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Pre-school Teacher positions only)
  • Provides a safe and nurturing learning environment for young children between the ages of 2 years, 9 months to 6 years; develops and maintains a learning environment conducive to growth in the areas of physical, cognitive, and social disciplines; records observations, implements assessments, sets goals for individual children, and prepares group lesson plans and activities accordingly.
  • Demonstrates the ability to positively interact with children; communicates verbally and in writing with children and their parents/legal guardians.
  • Recognizes health and safety hazards and protects children from harm; encourages and provides children with a variety of opportunities for learning and for social experiences; adapts and responds to changing and challenging conditions in ways that enhance program quality.

ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Adult Day Club position only)
  • Provide assistance with activities of daily living skills to clients, which can include activities, feeding, toileting, ambulation and behavior redirection.
  • Responsible for a safe and nurturing environment for those adults that have special needs, including preparing and leading engaging activities appropriate for each individual client.
  • Communicate clearly with other staff and volunteers regarding activity program and client needs.
  • Provides daily records by documenting the client's activities, noting any concerns or observations.

QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma/GED; AND three (3) years of experience in leading recreational activities; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of employment.
Required Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of:
  • Basic arithmetic.
  • Basic supervisory principles and practices.
  • Correct English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Basic record keeping and cash handling practices and policies.
  • The use of specified computer applications involving word processing, data entry and/or standard report generation.
  • Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.
  • Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, often in situations which may be stressful.
  • Gerontological issues with particular attention to ADL assistance, recreational and cultural programs that assist in independent living.
Skill in:
  • Planning, directing and reviewing the work of others.
  • Instructing others in work procedures.
  • Overseeing community recreational activities.
  • Performing cash handling and accounting activities.
  • Providing hands on supportive care to those that are unable to perform their own activities of daily living tasks.
  • Maintaining accurate office files.
  • Customer service.
  • Assembling pamphlets, reports, forms and other documents.
  • Communicating effectively in oral and written forms.
  • Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with staff, coworkers, and the public.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:
Valid Driver's License.
First Aid and CPR certification within six (6) months of date of employment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.

Compensation
Douglas County's compensation system is based on Pay for Performance wherein employees are eligible for annual performance evaluations. Current structure consists of merit increases up to 3% on a qualifying employee's anniversary and Cost of Living Adjustments based on the Consumer Price Index during the first pay period of each fiscal year. The COLA will be between 0% and 2% depending on the CPI each year. Additionally, eligible employees can be recognized for outstanding performance, above and beyond the call of duty, and receive additional compensation through the Recognition of Excellence Program.
