Job description

The On-Call Proctor/Academic Coach Job Responsibilities:

  • Attend all proctor and coaching sessions as assigned.
  • Manage admission to and from the testing room, distribute and collect paper test materials, and administer tests on the computer.
  • Monitor students continuously during test sessions to ensure a secure testing environment either in person or online (over Zoom).
  • Enforce exam rules regarding items near a test-taker (no other persons, textbooks, notes, or cell phones near the student while they are taking a test).
  • Remain in regular communication with Disability Services department and report any student concerns or testing irregularities.
  • Communicate with faculty to obtain and administer examinations as per the faculty member’s instruction.
  • Read texts (such as textbooks, class assignments, or exams) aloud to students or record student’s answers if this is part of a student’s accommodation.
  • Support students in their studies by teaching them how to manage their schedules, organize their study time, plan for the week, and other skills.
  • Help students learn by explaining assignments, learn study skills, and manage performance anxiety.
  • Model effective communication and professional behavior with students and teach students how to ask for help from professors and/or other support staff.
  • Be a source of support and encouragement for students and operate from a “growth mindset”.
  • Develop rapport and relationships with students yet remain within the boundaries of being an academic coach/mentor but not a mental health counselor.
  • Attend paid monthly training meetings
  • Maintain a calm presence yet be hyper-vigilant to the student’s behavior and needs.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality in communication with students and staff.

The On-Call Proctor/Academic Coach must:

  • Possess excellent communication skills – both orally and written.
  • Have excellent organizational, time management, and other executive functioning skills and be able to teach these to others.
  • Have good judgement and the experience to interact effectively with students with a variety of developmental, cognitive, and emotional needs.
  • Have prior experience helping students in a college setting and/or working with persons with disabilities
  • Always maintain exceptional customer service and professionalism when interacting with staff, faculty, and students.
  • Be able to work between 8:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m. and weekends as needed and have a flexible schedule to include morning and afternoon assignments.
  • Have high speed internet, a computer with a microphone and video camera and the capacity to run multiple programs at the same time (e.g. Google Chrome, Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat simultaneously).
  • Be able to use Microsoft software including Outlook, Word, and Excel and have strong research skills.
  • Have strong internet and computer skills and be able to teach others how to navigate a computer and computer programs.
  • Travel to multiple campuses throughout Berkeley College’s system. This travel can be done via public transportation or the use of the staff member’s personal vehicle. All transportation expenses are paid according to the college’s travel policy.

This position is Part-Time.

Salary range: $17.00 - $20.00 per hour.

Location of Position: Multiple campuses in Midtown Manhattan or New Jersey (Newark, Woodbridge, and Woodland Park)
