Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts. The Piedmont Health District proudly serves 7 counties and the local health departments within, including Prince Edward, Amelia, Nottoway, Lunenburg, Charlotte, Buckingham and Cumberland. The position advertised is home-based at the Prince Edward County Health Department, but may be required to travel to any of the 7 local health departments within the district as needed. Mileage will be reimbursed per standard mileage rate.
Under the guidance of a Nutritionist and/or Nutritionist Associate, obtains health and diet information from clients and provides low risk nutrition education according to protocols developed by Nutritionist. Independently schedules WIC appointments, maintains WIC records, compiles WIC reports, secures and verifies information needed for WIC income eligibility determination. Instructs clients about program guidelines and assists with WIC draft distribution.
1. Program Support
Accurately interviews clients to obtain proof of identification and proof of residency, and to calculate income eligibility, according to state guidelines
Issues and explains eWIC cards to clients
Assures appropriate data is taken/recorded; collects data as needed following protocols
Assist with questions regarding applications, refers complaints to supervisor
Reviews participant's rights/responsibilities; contacts participants regarding appointments; schedules appointments
Seeks/promotes program participation; documents all nutritional education provided
Provides timely customer service in regards to answering phone calls/ returning phone messages and walk-in clients
Promotes breastfeeding and makes appropriate referrals to appropriate resources
2. Outreach & Education
Participates in community outreach to promote/encourage program involvement for eligible clients
May present on nutritional education
Completes required training and developmental opportunities as assigned
3. Other Duties
May be required to perform other duties; may include functions in support of an emergency declaration

Minimum Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to: interview clients & collect client information; interpret, document, calculate & compile routine data; routinely obtain blood sample/finger stick from infants, children and women; provide patient education
Knowledge and skills with computers and software, i.e. Crossroads, internal webmail
Some knowledge of basic nutrition and nutritional standards
Must be able to communicate and interact with a variety of patients and work effectively as a member of a health care team

Additional Considerations

Additional training or course work in dietetics, food services or a related field
Some experience in food production or in a nutrition program
