JOB SUMMARY
Under close supervision, processes applications for participants in the Woman, Infants, and Children (WIC) supplemental food program; determines eligibility, prepares documents, and provides low-risk nutritional counseling.
The department is recruiting to fill two vacancies: one non-bilingual vacancy and one bilingual preferred vacancy.
To be qualified for the bilingual status, candidates must have the ability to speak and write in Punjabi. A comprehension exam will be required in the evaluation process for bilingual candidates. Bilingual candidates will receive an extra $100 per month on top of their base pay.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Nutrition Assistant I
Knowledge of: Basic principles of nutritional goal setting, basic nutritional terminology, methods and techniques of effective communication and interviewing; basic methods for assessing nutritional status of clients, office practices, procedures, and methods; basic mathematics; standard office equipment.
Ability to: Establish and maintain effective working relationships; understand, and follow oral and written instructions, maintain and record information accurately, communicate effectively both orally and in writing; operate standard office equipment; utilize various computer software programs.
Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or possession of a valid G.E.D. certificate AND Six (6) months of full-time experience performing clerical or front office duties in a health care setting or determining program eligibility, OR Completion of at least fifteen (15) semester units or twenty-two and a half (22.5) quarter units of college level course work in nutrition, health science/education, child development or a closely related field. OR A combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Nutrition Assistant II
Knowledge of: Methods for determining nutritional goals, nutritional education, and counseling methods; available services and resources provided by agency and community; referral and food delivery; effective interview techniques to elicit information from participants, nutrition terminology used in the department; office practices, procedures, and methods; basic mathematics; standard office equipment.
Ability to: Establish and maintain effective interpersonal relations with clients, the public and personnel at all organizational levels; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; maintain accurate records; operate standard office equipment; and utilize various software programs relevant to the position; provide counseling and education to program participants on nutrition matters.
Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or possession of a valid G.E.D. certificate, AND Two (2) years of full-time on-the-job training and/or experience performing community-oriented health care functions, health education, nutritional services, health counseling, and/or clinic management services duties in a health care setting, such as a hospital, clinic, or community health agency setting. OR combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires the ability to exert a small amount of physical effort in sedentary to light work involving moving from one area of the office to another; some positions require sufficient hand/eye coordination to perform semi-skilled repetitive movements, such as typing, filing, data entry, shorthand, and/or use of calculators, ten-key adding machine, or other office equipment or supplies; may involve extensive VDT exposure.
Disaster Service Workers: All Sutter County employees are designated as Disaster Service Workers during a proclaimed emergency and may be required to perform certain emergency services at the direction of the department and/or County.
License or Certificate:
Nutrition Assistant I: Employees must gain Supervisor's approval of Certified Professional Authority status from WIC within one (1) year of hire as a Nutritional Assistant I.
Nutrition Assistant II: Employees must have a state of California WIC program Nutrition Assistant Certificate of Completion ORgain Supervisor's approval of Certified Professional Authority status from WIC within six (6) months of employment.
