Job description

SUMMARY STATEMENT:
The Program Coordinator is responsible for classroom and laboratory teaching in the nursing program. In addition, the Coordinator is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the program and students in conjunction with the Director of Nursing. Maintains current licensure as a Registered Nurse in The State of Maryland and adheres to all regulations in the Maryland Nurse Practice Act. In addition to nursing, the Program Coordinator participates actively as a member of the college community.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
  • Reports directly to the Director of Nursing.
  • Supervises and provides leadership and direction for the Evening/Weekend Lab Technician and Office Associate
  • Works collaboratively with other faculty in the nursing program.
  • Maintains collegial relationships with clinical affiliates and members of the health services community as a whole.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Teaching
  • Teaches in the classroom, and skills laboratory.
  • Teaches clinical as required.
  • Visits each clinical site each semester as per policy.
  • Prepares and delivers lectures as assigned. Revises content as needed.
  • Develops skills lab experiences for students which includes researching procedures, writing objectives and outcomes, developing case-based scenarios and simulations, developing competency checklists, and conducting competency testing of students.
  • Conducts skills lab instruction which includes demonstration, supervised practice, and troubleshooting.

Assessment:
  • Develops and implements a variety of assessment tools to evaluate student learning and achievement of course outcomes.
  • Prepares, administers, and corrects exams, quizzes and homework assignments. Posts grades and reviews exams and other graded assignments with students as needed.
  • Conducts skills testing to validate student competency.
  • Counsels students as necessary regarding classroom, skills lab, or clinical concerns.
  • Completes Course Outcome Guide (COG) and other Student Learning Outcome Assessments (SLOA) each semester.
  • Completes Program Outcome Guide (POG)yearly at the end of each cohort.

Student Advisement:
  • Advises students regarding program requirements including program admission, progression, and graduation requirements.
  • Maintains five office hours per week.
  • Advises potential students on the rigor and requirements of the nursing program, to include the different tracks available.

Curriculum Development:
  • Assists the Director with assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the nursing program. Ensures adherence to program standards and achievement of program outcomes.
  • Participates in major and minor revisions to the Nursing Department framework, program outcomes, courses, labs, and clinical experiences as needed, in response to student testing, changes in health care, patient care standards, standards of practice and accrediting agencies.
  • Collaborates with the other Nursing Faculty in reviewing editions of nursing textbooks to determine correct edition and appropriate material for class.

Shared Governance:
  • Participates in college, division, and department meetings.
  • Participates on a College Shared Governance committee.

Professional Development:
  • Maintains current licensure, CPR, and specialty certifications.
  • Develops annually, and follows through with an approved professional development plan.
  • Actively participates in continuing education activities to maintain licensure, maintain teaching and clinical expertise, and fulfill clinical agency practice standards.

College Service:
  • Participates in college activities that address departmental responsibilities, community outreach, or student or campus life activities.
  • Assists Nursing Director in interviewing, hiring, orienting, mentoring adjunct and clinical faculty for the Evening/Weekend program.
  • Attends professional meetings in the community as needed to pursue new ideas and develop relationships and opportunities that are relevant to the nursing program.
  • Works on Nursing and College-wide accreditation paperwork as needed

Community Service:
  • Participates in voluntary community service activities as appropriate.

Other Responsibilities:
  • Assists in developing the clinical schedule for students in conjunction with community agencies and other nursing schools.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Master of Science Degree in nursing with a minimum of two years Medical-Surgical experience in an acute care setting required.
  • At least two years of critical care experience in an acute clinical setting required.
  • Two to three years of college teaching Medical-Surgical/Critical Care nursing in an accredited nursing program preferred.
  • RN license or eligible in the state of Maryland.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to establish effective relationships with members of the community, students, fellow faculty, and college staff. Ability to learn and work with a variety of clinical simulation software and other computer applications such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Able to organize and prioritize work, attend to details, and work in a team-oriented setting.
