Position Summary:

This position is responsible for academic advising, mentoring and remediating nursing students in the associate degree program towards successful academic progression through the nursing curriculum and NCLEX-RN licensure success. This position provides comprehensive support for students and will assist them in developing an academic learning success plan each semester. As such, the position will serve as a liaison with other academic support services on campus (ie. Learning Specialists, peer tutors, Office of Student Accessibility).

Example of Job Duties:

Under the direction of the Academic Division Nursing Director. theNursing Academic Success and Retention Specialist is responsible for academic advising, mentoring and remediating nursing students through effective performance in these essential duties:

  • Demonstrate competency related to all aspects of the NCLEX-RN including knowledge of NCLEX-RN test plan, test taking strategies, and NCLEX-RN preparation products (i.e. ATI).
  • Identify students through data collection and analysis that require specialized advising and tutoring related to nursing curricular content.
  • Perform specialized advising and tutoring in one-on-one and small group format specific to nursing curricular content.
  • Actively monitor and document individual student progress and provide remediation and direction as needed.
  • Identify graduates at risk and implement review plan and monitoring including post-graduation.
  • Collaborate with campus and leadership team to achieve NCLEX-RN goals. Monitor quarterly the annual licensure pass rates for assigned cohorts.
  • Identify students through data collection and analysis that require specialized advising and tutoring related to nursing curricular content.
  • Meet one-on-one with at-risk students on a regular basis to monitor utilization of success strategies.
  • Coach students in test taking skills and strategies for preparation for all exams.
  • Analyze relevant student data from course related exams (ie. ExamSoft) to identify gaps in outcomes in collaboration with associate dean and program chair.
  • Work closely with faculty/staff mentors and advisors and other academic staff to provide students effective learning plans.
  • Manage an assigned caseload of advisees.
  • Monitor and document student progress towards successful course and licensure outcomes.
  • Collaborate with associate dean and program chair regarding student retention and Academic Success data.
  • Adapt and develop as an academic specialist in response to the dynamic nature of nursing education.

Incumbents must possess proven ability to effectively work with a culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and student. They are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong Information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.).

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Nursing or a related field or a combination of education, training and experience which would lead to the competencies required for successful performance of the position’s essential duties.

Incumbents are required to have demonstrated advanced knowledge and abilities in the following: 

  • Two (2) years of experience/knowledge in preparing students for NCLEX\_RN and/or working with new graduate RNs.
  • Knowledge of pre-licensure RN curriculum.
  • Strong collaboration skills.
  • Ability to organize time and maintain accurate documentation of advising meetings.

Salary:

$37.48 hourly.
