Job description

Job Objective:

The Nurse Technician/Secretary performs various patient care activities and related non-professional services necessary in caring for the personal needs, safety and comfort of patient and assists in maintenance of a safe and clean environment under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. Nurse Technicians who have received orientation to and are competent to function in the role of Secretary I may as needed by the department function in this role in order to facilitate unit functions. In the cross trained role the Nurse Technician/Secretary will perform department secretarial tasks as well as various supportive duties.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Nurse Technician Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide patient care which includes accurate observations of the patient needs, reporting patient symptoms and needs to the Licensed Nurse.
  2. High Degree of Involvement with patients and family members.
  3. Maintains Proper Body Alignment at all times.
  4. Assists in providing general routine patient care based upon the Registered Nurse's assessment and plan of care, adhering to accepted policies and procedures.
  5. Performs basic patient care tasks such as hygiene, making occupied and unoccupied beds, provide oral care, peri care and hair care, assist with elimination, assist with feeding and feeding patients when necessary.
  6. Assist with patient movement including range of motion, turning patients every 2 hours and positioning them in bed and assisting to the chair when applicable.
  7. Transport patients by gurney, bed or wheelchair.
  8. Removal and application of restraints.
  9. Replace telemetry batteries and patches as requested.
  10. Prevent skin breakdown.
  11. Vital signs including pain level.
  12. Assist with maintaining accurate intake and output
  13. Participate in hourly rounding to assess patient needs and safety.
  14. Assist in the facilitation of a quiet environment.
  15. Procedures related to elimination including foley care, colostomy care, urostomy care and including but not limited to appliance emptying and changing.
  16. Perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation as requested.
  17. Perform Electrocardiograms
  18. Ambulation with assistive devices such as crutches, walkers or gait belts.
  19. Care of tubes and drains including Jackson Pratt, hemovac and pleurovac.
  20. Use of equipment including intermittent compression devices, traction, scales and cast care.
  21. Surgical skin preparation
  22. Perform errands to facilitate work flow ie: take specimens to lab
  23. Operates technical equipment safely and appropriately.
  24. Demonstrates knowledge regarding special needs and behaviors of age specific groups.
  25. Documents accurately in the electronic medical record, restraint record, belongings list.
  26. Demonstrates knowledge of legal aspects of care, knowledge of legal documents pertinent to unit/area of care.
  27. Knowledge of the computer system in use.

Secretary I Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides normal clerical support as needed to support unit functions such as copying, scanning, typing, filing, faxing and ordering of department supplies.
  2. Assembles/maintains medical records according to hospital/unit practice.
  3. Processes patient paperwork and prioritizes according to highest need.
  4. Ability to learn required computer skills within orientation period and maintains competency.
  5. Transcribes physician orders accurately, timely, and efficiently.
  6. High degree of involvement with patients and family members.
  7. Transports patients when required.
  8. Performs errands when assigned to facilitate unit work flow; e. transports specimens to lab, acts as messenger to various departments, etc.
  9. Answers telephones in a courteous manner and directs calls appropriately.
  10. Assist in maintenance of safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients.
  11. Assists as needed in completion of unit support record keeping, department reports and/or statistical sheets and department meeting minutes.
  12. Maintains department specific certifications.
  13. Maintains department inventories.
  14. Operates technical equipment safely and appropriately.
  15. Orders requisitions for a variety of hospital services.
  16. Demonstrates knowledge regarding special needs and behaviors of age specific groups.
  17. Answers call lights.
  18. Thins charts as needed.
  19. Copies charts for transfers as needed.
  20. Rounds for discharges; assesses empty bed status.
  21. Processes and coordinates information for team leaders and charge nurses as needed.

Non-Essential Duties

  • Assist in special projects/assignments as needed

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of basic nurse technician skills.
  • Working knowledge of basic medical terminology or ability to successfully complete studies in medical terminology within six (6) months of employment.

Education and Experience:

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience

  • Minimum one (1) year experience in an acute care setting preferred.
  • Minimum one (1) year secretarial experience preferred.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience as a nurse technician preferred.

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • Possess and maintain current certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers.
  • Possess and maintain a current California License as a CNA preferred.
