Description
A Registered Nurse (RN) supervisor oversees a team of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Medical Assistants, ensuring smooth operations, compliance with health and safety standards and regulations, and quality of patient care. The supervisor may provide some direct patient care, especially during emergencies or staffing shortages, but the primary responsibilities are administrative. The RN supervisor typically is responsible for scheduling shifts, making sure adequate coverage of personnel is present, and ensuring the skill set of staff is appropriate for the provision of patient care. The supervisor is responsible for seeing that internal policies, as well as external regulations, are followed; they also develop or improve organizational procedures.
The nature of this position is fast-paced and can be high-stress at times and can involve continuous conflict resolution among both patients and staff. To be successful in the role, a Registered Nurse Supervisor must possess excellent organizational and time-management skills, as well as exhibit superior interpersonal and communication skills with a variety of people such as patients, subordinate nurses, administrative staff, counselors, and Medical Providers. The RN supervisor must be able to work efficiently under pressure and remain calm in emotional or stressful situations. They can expect to work at least 40 hours a week and could work additional hours as needed.
Job Functions (May Include)
Supervisory Duties
1. Provide direct care to patients, assess their status, and administer medication and treatments.
2. Add to, review, and ensure good practices for documentation in patient charts.
3. Communicate with Medical Providers to enhance collaboration and improve patient care.
4. Supervises all nursing staff, including scheduling as well as ensuring training courses are complete and up to date.
5. Monitors and ensures compliance of all regulatory agencies affecting the day-to-day operations of the dispensary.
6. Review and approve electronic timesheets for each pay period as well as approve leave according to staffing needs
7. Review nursing charting and coach staff as needed regarding documentation.
8. Responsible for assisting with conflict resolution among nursing staff and between outside departments and nursing
9. Assist with hiring nursing staff and ensuring adequate staffing
10. Serve as backup to Dispensary Operations Manager during vacations and operates as a liaison between Dispensary staff and other departments as needed.
11. Collaborate with Dispensary Operations Manager to conduct performance evaluations of dispensary nurse staff in accordance with agency policies, established goals, state regulations, and agency values.
12. Assist Dispensary Operations Manager with arranging and conducting departmental meetings. Providing agenda items etc.
13. Assist Dispensary Operations Manager in reviewing relevant patient and medication incidents in the electronic medical record and provide timely and accurate resolution on issues as they arise.
14. Correct electronic medical record of dose history when warranted.
15. Operate as the backup to Dispensary Operations Manager as needed.
16. May from time to time consult with Medical Director or Associate Medical Director as needed while supporting the relationship between nursing and the physicians.
17. Assist with dispensary audits (DEA, Board of Pharmacy, DOH or other regulatory agencies) as needed.
Dispensary Duties:
1. Assist in the planning for all Dispensary services, as well as evaluate the needs and effectiveness of current practices. This includes all dispensing activity, maintenance of medication records, and accurate execution of medication orders.
2. Assist in ordering and taking delivery of scheduled drugs, ensure the security of scheduled drug dispensing and storage, and ensure accurate records of scheduled drug dispensing and storage in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
3. Assist in serving as liaison with other departments and with the community as needed to coordinate patient care.
Other:
1. May host visiting staff, visiting students, or other outside visitors in the dispensary as requested according to regulations.
2. May attend internal and external meetings as required.
3. Additional duties as assigned.
4. Local travel may be required on behalf of the agency.
Requirements
Qualification Requirements
Education
Must be a Registered Nurse and have a current Washington State License in the field of Nursing. Must be a Registered Nurse for 5 years.
Experience
Supervisory experience of at least 2 years in a nursing role. Experience in Opioid treatment is desired, however previous experience with drug misuse treatment is not required.
Knowledge Requirements
1. Knowledge of all federal and state regulations pertaining to the storage, ordering, and dispensing of scheduled substances in an Opioid Treatment Facility.
2. Aptitude for staff management.
3. Computer literate, with basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, and electronic medical records systems, as well as a high level of initiative in keeping current with technological change.
4. Ability to prioritize workload and activities of self and others and follow through on assigned tasks to assure completion promptly.
5. Ability to handle multiple tasks and switch between tasks quickly.
6. The ability to alphabetize and file charts/information accurately is required.
7. High integrity and ethical standards.
