GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the direction and supervision of the responsible Registered Nurse, performs specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs of the patient using the nursing process. Provides input to assist the RN in planning and implementing patient care. Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures. Recognizes and participates in own continuing education.
Nurse Extern Qualifications:
Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
Must be currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing (BSN preferred).
Must complete two clinical rotations, one of which must be on a Medical/Surgical unit (in an acute care setting) by scheduled start date.
To remain in the Nurse Extern role you MUST:
- Actively be enrolled in a nursing program;
- Successfully complete each course;
- Provide transcripts to Nurse Manager after each course;
- Provide a copy of your plan of work to your Nurse Manager.
- Must be available for at least a week long training from 8 AM-4:30 PM.
- If at any point the extern does not meet their academic institution’s standard for continued enrollment in the school of nursing classes, their employment as an extern will be rescinded.
