Directly responsible for the administration of anesthesia to surgical patients while doing preoperative evaluations and selecting appropriate anesthetics. Assures proper administration of anesthetic while monitoring the patient during the course of surgery and emergence and follows the patient postoperatively.

- Essential Functions:
- Performs and documents a pre-anesthetic assessment and evaluation of a patient.
- Evaluates anesthetic risk to the patient, including making decisions regarding the patient’s fitness for anesthesia at the proposed time.
- Requests and interprets consultations and diagnostic studies.
- Selects, obtains, orders and administers pre-anesthetic medications.
- Selects medications to be held prior to surgery.
- Selects, obtains, orders and administers intravascular fluids.
- Obtains informed consent for anesthesia and establishes a personal rapport with the patient in order to dispel fear and anxiety.
- Develops an anesthesia care plan and coordinates it with the planned diagnostic or therapeutic intervention.

- Selects, applies and inserts appropriate non-invasive and invasive monitoring modalities for continuous evaluation of the patient’s physical status.
- Manages fluid therapy and blood replacement, including identification and correction of volume loss, electrolyte and/or coagulation abnormalities.
- Recognizes cardiac dysrrythmias and implements appropriate interventions.
- Manages patient’s airways and pulmonary status using current practice modalities.
- Recognizes abnormal patient responses to anesthesia, surgery and/or adjunctive medication and implements corrective services.
- Facilitates emergence and recovery from anesthesia by selecting, obtaining, ordering and administering medications, fluids and ventilatory support. P. Discharges the patient from a post-anesthesia care area.
- Provides post-anesthesia follow-up evaluation care.
- Evaluates and treats patients for anesthesia-related problems or complications.
- Collaborating as necessary with physicians and other nurses involved in the patient’s care.
- Provides consultation upon request by physicians or other health care providers pertaining to post-operative analgesics, antiemetics, fluid and electrolyte management, maintenance of cardiovascular, as well as, respiratory homeostatis.
- Implements acute and chronic pain management modalities.
- Responds to emergency situations by providing airway management, administration of emergency fluids and drugs, and using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques as available during working hours.
- Secures, prepares and provides basic safety checks on all equipment, monitors, supplies and drugs used for the administration of anesthesia
- Recognizes pressure areas and potential pressure areas such as equipment, hoses, tubes, and secures with padding.
- Supports and abides by all organizational, departmental and safety policies and procedures.
- Adapts positively to the ever changing healthcare environment by supporting technology and process changes.
- Documents patient information in the electronic/paper record in an accurate, timely manner.
- Maintains active log-on/passwords for computer software systems that support patient care and education.
Position Requirements:
Education:
- Be a graduate of an approved school of nursing and hold a current state licensure as a registered nurse.
- Be a graduate of a nurse anesthesia educational program accredited by the AANA Council of Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs or its predecessor.
- Have successfully completed the certification examination administered by the AANA Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists or its predecessor.
- Must show proof of current licensure as a Registered Nurse, and Advanced Practice Nurse, active practice as a CRNA, appropriate continuing education, and verification of the absence of mental, physical, or other problems that could interfere with the practice of anesthesia.
- Must comply with the state requirements regulating the advanced practice of nursing.
- DEA Registration and CSA Iowa Controlled Substances Certificate.
- Active Member of AANA preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum five (5) years experience in a rural hospital setting preferred.
- Special Skills and Aptitude:
- 1. ACLS, BLS, PALS
- 2. Demonstrates leadership qualities and possesses good interpersonal and communication skills.
- 3. Must have basic computer skills.
