Job Summary: Nuclear Medicine technologists are responsible for administering radiopharmaceuticals to patients as well as monitoring the functions and characteristics of organs or tissues where drugs become localized. Technologists also operate cameras that map and detect radioactive drugs within a patient's body for the purpose of creating diagnostic images. Technologists also explain procedures, position patients and prepare the radiopharmaceuticals. Technologists must adhere to specific safety standards while preparing radiopharmaceuticals to reduce the chance of exposure to radiation. They must also maintain patient records as well as document the type and amount of radionuclides they use, discard and receive.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Calculate measure and record radiation dosage or radiopharmaceuticals received, used and disposed, using computer and following physician's prescription.
- Detect and map radiopharmaceuticals in patient bodies, using a camera to produce computer images.
- Explain test procedures and safety precautions to patients and provide them with assistance during test procedures.
- Administer radiopharmaceuticals or radiation to patients to detect or treat diseases, using radioisotope equipment, under direction of physician.
- Process cardiac function studies, using computer.
- Dispose of radioactive materials and store radiopharmaceuticals, following radiation safety procedures.
- Record and process results of procedures.
- Prepare stock radiopharmaceuticals, adhering to safety standards that minimize radiation exposure to workers and patients.

MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: Certified by NMTCB and hold a Nuclear Medicine diploma.
- Work Experience Thirty six months previous experience as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist.
- Training JCERT accredited Nuclear Medicine program
- License/Certification NMTCB
ENVIROMENTAL CONDITIONS: Work environment consists of daily patient contact, which may include exposure to blood, or other body fluids.
