What You Will Do
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is looking for enthusiastic senior-level engineers with an interest in managing the development and implementation of a site-wide Pressure Safety Program. This position will be located within the Engineering Services - Facility Engineering (ES-FE) group.
This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3/Nuclear Facilities Engineer 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 ($119,200 - $201,100)
The selected individual will serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the Pressure Safety Program and be responsible with implementing the appropriate requirements from 10 CFR 851, Worker Safety and Health Program. Considering Pressure Safety is a LANL safety management program, the position will routinely interface with engineering management and other directorates across the laboratory. The candidate will sit on the Pressure Safety Committee, interfacing with the Engineering Technical Authority, to resolve questions concerning either program or code requirements. Will be responsible for proactively identifying and promoting process improvements within the program. In all, the Pressure Safety Program Engineer will provide a full range of Pressure Safety technical support services to organizations within LANL. In doing so, the candidate will need to have expertise knowledge with principles, theories and concepts associated with Pressure Safety implementation.
Nuclear Facilities Engineer 4 $143,100-$248,200
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will be considered a Senior Pressure Safety Program Engineer. Accordingly, you will be expected to lead all activities associated at the Engineer 3 level. In addition, you may serve as a team lead responsible for the mentoring of junior staff; be assigned moderate to complex assignments; and be able to work independently and as part of a team.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:

  • High-level experience working with design development, construction, commissioning and maintenance of Structure, Systems and Components (SSCs). Including engineering work planning and control methods, engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies.
  • In-depth knowledge of Engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.
  • Proven ability to perform work in accordance with the Conduct of Engineering (CoE) formality and applicable Federal, State, and Laboratory codes and standards.
  • Working knowledge of ASME B31 and ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Codes.
  • Experience in conducting engineering program assessments and establishing performance based indicators for adequacy of program implementation.
  • Effectively communicates engineering solutions both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and maintenance personnel.
  • Ability to obtain, evaluate, and compare equipment selections from manufacturer's representatives.
  • In-depth knowledge of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Proven ability to work independently, with growing responsibility, and not requiring much oversight.
Additional Job Requirements for Nuclear Facilities Senior Pressure SafetyProgram Engineer 4:
  • Proven experience of safety or engineering program development and/or execution. Including the development of processes/procedures that implement program requirements.
  • Expert knowledge of industry, regulatory, and DOE/NNSA complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to Vital Safety Systems such as DOE O 420.1C and DOE STD- 1189.
  • Considered as an expert in ASME B31 and ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Codes.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience involving diverse tasks, teams, and organizations.
  • Working knowledge of overseeing allocated funds in support of program implementation.
Education/Experience for Nuclear Facilities Senior Pressure SafetyProgram Engineer 3:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Education/Experience for Nuclear Facilities Senior Pressure SafetyProgram Engineer 4:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 12 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job. DOE 426.2 requires a BS degree, 2 years job related experience and 1 year non-reactor nuclear experience for technical support personnel who perform work independently at Nuclear Facilities.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Mechanical engineering discipline, preferably an advanced degree.
  • Professional Engineering License.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance:
Q (position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility Requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
